Review: Illamasqua Obey Lipstick

Illamasqua Lipstick in "Obey"

I will start out by just saying how utterly disappointed I am with this lipstick.  I love Illamasqua products so I thought I would love their lipsticks as well.  Not the case.  I researched these online before purchasing of course.  The reviews said that these lipsticks were drier than most and that they tugged on the lips during application.  While I agree, I think those are understatements.  I expected it to be a little dry, but this is the driest lipstick I've ever used!

Some highlights of this product:
  • Very pigmented.  The color is so gorgeous! I wish the formula wasn't so terrible.  It's the perfect milky baby pink.
  • Very dry.  You have to put pressure on it to apply it and it tugs a little.
  • It looked terrible on!  Accentuated every lip imperfection and even created new ones!
  • Has a matte finish.
Like I said, I've never used a lipstick this dry.  The fact that it is a matte finish should not be an excuse for the terrible texture.  I have many mattes with great formulas.  Here are some pictures (Note: I had exfoliated my lips that very same day):
This how it looks on the lips.  I took it off immediately!  I was going out right after and I didn't want anyone to see me with that hot mess in public:
This is how it left my lips afterwards (poor lips!):
I gave it a second chance on a different day.  I wore it over 2 or 3 layers of lip balm:
As you can see it looks better, but still not up to standards (specially for a high end lipstick).  It also sheered out the color.

In summary, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.  There are so many lipsticks with better formulas that cost a lot less money than this.  I don't know how other bloggers managed to get nice lip swatches.  This simply doesn't work for me and I shouldn't have to put that much effort into a lipstick.  The sad part is I bought another one (Brink) which I haven't used. I'm afraid it will be as terrible as this one so I will try to return it.  Save your money, girls, skip this!

  1. OMG! That's exactly how one of Barry M's lipsticks looked on me- in shade Peach. I wasn't brave enough to add the photos though :)

    1. Hahaha. We've all had some lipsticks that really don't agree with our lips. I was just so shocked at how bad it looked (specially coming from Illamasqua) that I had to share! xx

  2. Wow, I can't believe how dry that is! I recently purchased the Illamasqua blush in 'lover' after your review and when I saw your post on my dashboard, I was worrying over 'i probably should have gotten this too'... and then I saw your review and was relieved haha. Maybe you could try mixing it with a lip balm instead of applying it on top? It's such a pretty color.

    1. That's a good idea. I'm going to keep trying ways to make it work for me since I already spent so much on it.
Hope you're loving Lover :) xx

  3. Sorry to hear the formula is so poor because, as you said, the shade is beautiful. I've heard great things about other Illamasqua lipstick shades, though, so here's hoping they're not all so uncomfortable!

  4. Aww, I'm sorry this didn't work out for you! I have a few Illamasqua lipsticks (Climax, Test, Growl) and I really like them. They are on the drier side, but I haven't had this sort of issue with them. Then again, I work really hard to keep my lips moisturized, so I don't think I've ever applied them when I've had dryness or flakes. I also really like these lipsticks as "bases" that can be mixed with balm or gloss; since they're matte on their own, I look at them as a versatile product to be combined with other lip products to produce varying effects. I often mix mine with a touch of balm to get a nearly-opaque lip stain effect since they're so pigmented, and that tends to be a more comfortable way for me to wear them... Anyway, sometimes body chemistry and other mysterious things affect whether a formula works for you or not, and nothing you do will help :( For instance, I can't wear MAC lipsticks; they settle into my lip lines like no other! Hopefully you'll be able to return these if they don't work for you!

    1. Climax was another one on my wishlist. I haven't had any other lipstick look this bad on me before, not even matte or long-wearing ones. I think the formula might differ a bit from shade to shade. I did put on a different lipstick right after this one and it looked fine so I know that it wasn't my lips, it was Obey. Sadly, like you said, everyone has different lips and skin so I might not be able to make it work. Thanks for commenting! xxx

  5. What a gorgeous shade, but it's a shame it didn't look as nice on! :(

  6. I just tried my new Illamasqua lipstick yesterday and Fable was very dry, just like Obey. However, Drench worked out pretty good. So I'm guessing the formula varies between shades.

    1. Yeah, I've been hearing that there are some really dry ones and some normal ones. It's making me curious about trying the other one I bought. xx

  7. Oh it's such a shame because it's a beautiful colour! I had an orange Barry M lipstick that tugged & made my lips look horrendous. Thanks for the heads up.

  9. Such a gorgeous lipstick it just sucks about how drying the formula is. I hate how it happens, I've had this happen with a couple of Mac ones and had to stick a load of balm on beforehand. Deffo expect more considering the cost.

  11. Oh, gutted :( I've got an Illamasqua gift set for Christmas! I didn't realise their lipsticks were bad, and there's me thinking I'm an informed blogger :(
Hope you're able to return the other one hun, no offence but this one really does look terrible.

  12. omg That's one of the worst I've seen. No offence. so annoying when you want something and expect it to be really good, and then it's not. I'll be steering very clear of these! Thanky ou!

  16. Aw oh no, you can't be serious! I have heard such terrible things about their lipsticks but when I got Magnetism, I was super relieved that it was soooo creamy and not drying, since I have naturally dry lips - thanks eczema! Can't you get a refund for them? That's terrible, I'm sorry ):

    1. Sephora has some really good return policies, but I can't find the receipt. :/

    2. Sephora will exchange it without a receipt, I've exchanged a few items that I've lost receipts on. They have never given me a problem:) may be worth a chance

  19. OMG! I'm glad I've gone with my instinct - every time I've swatched these I've disliked the powdery matte texture. Thanks for the review.

    1. I swatched them at the store as well and they seemed dry. I should have gone with my gut, lol. Even if I make them work with lip care and balms, the texture is just too dry for my liking. xx

  20. I have tons of their lipsticks and they really do differ on every single shade, Obey was one I couldn't get on with either it looked quite like what it did on yours. I just bought Magnetism, actually going to pop a review up of it very soon because its like no other Illamasqua lipstick I've ever used, very creamy and moisturising xx

    1. That's really sad that they are so hit and miss. :( I wish they weren't so inconstant. It's like a lottery, you could get a really bad one or a good one. Shouldn't be that way considering they aren't cheap. xx

  22. Such a shame the fomula is so drying! It's similar colour wise to Barry Ms 147, which is just as drying. I always find it a pain when you have lipsticks that need really perfect lips in order to look good! we all suffer with dryness, especially in the colder months! hmph!

  23. Give Brink a try. I've got a matte red from illamasqua - I think its encounter and I have no problem with it as long as I buff my lips before hand.
