Hi, loves. Today I'm reviewing one of my favorite red lipsticks: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl. I got this back in November and every time I use it I fall in love with it even more! This is my second favorite red (my absolute favorite being NARS's Mascate.)
Color & Finish
Dragon Girl is a really bright and vibrant red. It's really blue toned and will make your teeth look amazing. The finish is a true matte. Flat with no shine whatsoever. I love it, it looks very modern.
Longevity
This is not a long-wearing lipstick, so when you drink or blot there will be some transferring. It lasts really long though because it sets to a powdery-feeling finish. It's the perfect red for dinners or parties because it fades evenly. Patchy lipstick is not a good look!
Formula
It applies soft and creamy. Once it's on your lips, it sets in a way that resembles a powder. I do feel a little tightness while it's on, but I have to stress that it's not drying at all. It doesn't crack or accentuate imperfections. The formula is excellent.
Packaging
Gorgeous but terrible. The pencil doesn't twist up so you will need a sharpener with a wide opening. Some product will be wasted when you sharpen it (which is heart breaking considering it costs $24 USD/£17.50)
This is a previous FOTD I had posted wearing Dragon Girl on my lips. Should have used lip liner on the close up shot! :)
Bottom line: I wish every matte lipstick was like this one. It's 100% matte yet I don't find it the slightest bit drying. I think blue toned reds suit everyone, not just people with cool undertones. I can't rave about this enough! If you love mattes, this is for you.

ReplyDeleteOn the tube it's quite creamy so I can use a brush. It makes sharpening less frequent but still unavoidable xxx

Awesome...thats amazing that its matte and not drying. I have lips that dry out very easily and I'd love a stain that isnt drying. You look beauituful with the minimalistic make up and bold lips!

DeleteSO ironic because I was actually just talking with my friend today who works at Sephora and he was telling me I had to try this out since I love red lips but despise matte finishes! Definitely will have to try it now. Such a shame about the sharpening though ;(

Thanks for the helpful review! This looks absolutely gorgeous and it's great to hear the formula is lip-friendly. Not all matte lipsticks are! I have NARS Cruella Velvet Matte pencil and it's one of my favourites as well :)
