Why Do I Wear Makeup?

Today is Thursday which means a Try It Out Thursday post was supposed to go up.  I didn't have time to prepare one this week so I will be skipping it.  I didn't feel like doing a rushed one just for the sake of posting it.
Although I have some posts queued, I decided to post the Why Do You Wear Makeup tag because the lovely Lau tagged me a while ago.  Plus, I read Lena's on Sleep and Water and it inspired me to post mine.  It took me a while because I wasn't sure if I should.  Even though I love to read tags, I don't know if others do.  Either way, it was fun to write.

1.  When did you start wearing makeup?
I honestly don't remember.  I do remember that by the time I was 13 I was already wearing eyeshadows that my mom ordered for me from Avon catalogs.  One of my teachers told me that it wasn't appropriate for me to wear green eyeshadow to school, which made me self-conscious for a while and I stopped using it.  How dare she!  I loved my green, pink, and blue Avon palette.  Don't tell a 13 year old girl what not to put on her face! :)
2.  What was the first makeup product you bought that you loved?
The Maybelline Expert Wear Eyeshadow Quad in Emerald Smokes.  They still sell them and I still have (and use) mine.  The eyeshadows were labeled base, crease, lid, and liner.  Thanks to that, I learned what eyeshadow placing was and started to experiment with it.

3.  What is your most used eyeshadow?
Since I try to alternate, a safe answer would be "any matte brown" but for the sake of the tag I'm going to say MAC's Espresso.

4.  When did you begin loving makeup?
I fell in love with it from the moment I used it (sounds so dramatic!).  When I was a teenager I would spend so much time at the drugstore looking at makeup isles.  I liked the aspect of enhancing my looks.  However, as I got older I fell in love with the creative side of makeup:  makeup as an art form.  Looking at special effects makeup and editorials is really inspiring.  That's why I love Illamasqua so much.  I like their slogan "makeup for your alter ego" and their adverts are amazing!

5.  How do you feel without makeup?
I feel really comfortable without makeup now.  I go out in public without it (to class, to get lunch, do errands, etc.) and I feel fine.  However, if I don't wear makeup my hair needs to look nice.  I can't go out with horrible hair and no makeup! When I was younger I wouldn't let people see me without eyeliner.  I've come far!

6. What do you like about makeup?
I love that it has become like a ritual.  Doing my makeup is fun and relaxing.  I consider it "me time" just like reading a book or painting my nails.
7.  Three holy grail items:
Mascara - I have a lot of mascaras I like so I won't pick just one, but in general mascara makes such a difference!
Concealer - A year ago I wasn't a foundation girl so I could go without it.  I could go without powder as well.  Right now my favorite concealer is the Revlon PhotoReady.
Eyeshadow - Any matte brown eyeshadow because I can use it for my brows, to do smoky eyes or to use as eyeliner with a thin brush

8.  Why do you wear makeup?
Because I thoroughly enjoy it.  I love getting creative with it and experimenting with colors and textures.  I wear it to enhance my features and because I like the way it looks.

Bonus question added by me :)
9.  Any misconceptions about makeup that really bother you?
Yes, many, but I will only list two.
Women wear makeup to cover insecurities - In my opinion makeup doesn't hide, it enhances.  Plus, if a woman does want to use makeup to feel better about herself and hide insecurities then that's great!  Why not do something that makes you feel happier?  I love that concealer can make me feel better if my face is full of blemishes that day.  I know that some people think that's vain, but to me it's taking care of yourself physically.  Just like fixing your hair and wearing nice clothes, etc.

We wear makeup to impress men/others - When someone tells me "You don't need to wear makeup, I like you better without it" or "Why are you so dolled up today? Who are you going to see?" or something of the sort I get a little annoyed. First, I give them the stink eye.  Then, I always say: "Who said I made myself up for you?"  Let me not get into a big rant and leave it at that :)

  2. I agree so much with the wearing makeup to impress/hide insecurities! I think that a lot of people who wear makeup get those remarks from time to time. I love that makeup has come a really long way - a lot of 13 year olds at my time didn't even think about wearing makeup, and now we see a lot of younger people wearing it!

  3. I love these kinds of tags, they're really interesting to read and I like hearing how people got into make up. I have mac's espresso too and I use it on my brows :) copperplate is another amazing colour from them :). I agree with you about the misconception of wearing make up for men, I wear it because I like how I look with make up on and I like wearing different colours on my lips/cheeks etc, my boyfriend couldn't care less whether I wore make up or not.xx

    Almost Delightful

  5. Loved reading your answers Coco!!! I'm getting to know you a bit better and tags sure are a fun way to do it. Thanks for doing my tag!!! (well it's not entirely mine, I just added a few more questions LOL) and I adored bonus question nº9, you said it girl and I couldn't agree more, I wear makeup first and foremost for me, not others, if anything, I can honestly say I care more about what other women think about my makeup than men, I mean, what do most guys know anyway, no? hahahaha Hugs & kisses for you darling *muacks

    1. Hahaha, I loved the questions you added and tags are great because they make blogs more personable. Yeah, I agree completely. If anything I care more about a women's perspective on makeup because either way I'm sure a guy will not be impressed by how straight my winged liner is. Thanks for reading, love! xxxx

Me encanto este post as you may have noticed :)

    Un besito coco,

  12. Such a great tag, I really enjoyed reading about this! It's so true that as I've gotten older, I've become more comfortable with wearing less to no makeup. I remember the first time I began wearing makeup was around the age of 13 and it was dark eyeliner all around the eye - definitely not my best look!

    1. Hahaha, me too. My makeup used to consist of just eyeliner on the waterline or all over the eyes. xx

  17. Tags are so much because I feel like I get to know my fellow beauty bloggers better! I totally am with ya-- I used to feel so uncomfortable unless I had eye liner on, and now I'm so comfortable without any make up on. We've come a long way. ;)

  18. Great post! I feel the same way about makeup- I've loved it for as long as I can remember (both for its beautifying and creative aspects), and recall spending hours in the drug store makeup department when I was 13-15 years old. Then when I was 16 I made my first trip to Sephora and the rest was history! ;)

Really enjoyed reading this! Great tag :)

  19. I love that one of the first products you remember using was a Maybelline eyeshadow quad - me too lol! Though mine wasn't Emerald Smokes, it was Velvet Crush :) It's great that you are perfectly comfortable without any makeup at all. The added question of yours is so interesting - I really enjoyed reading your answers to that one. This whole tag made me rethink more deeply the personal and sometimes complex relationship women have with makeup.

  20. I don't know why some people make such a big taboo about makeup and what a women should/shouldn't wear. I feel the same way you do about makeup. People get it so twisted but I really don't care. Sometimes when I do a bold makeup look and post it...some people comment and say things like oh it's bold and looks great on you but I would never wear that or this won't look good on on my face, etc... That just tells me that even people who wear makeup are still closed-minded about it. The point is of course I don't go in public on a typical day with dramatic makeup on. There is always a place and time and the right occasion to wear such. When I do a bold look it's more for the sake of art and being creative and playful. I come to find that not many beauty enthusiasts appreciate that artsy side. If the makeup isn't considered "wearable" then to them it's pointless.

    1. This is a great point you've brought up! It's very true that even some makeup wearers are a bit conservative (sometimes even judgmental). Wearable is very subjective. If someone's daily wearable is much more dramatic or colorful than mine, I would still admire their technique and creativity. Also, I think comments like that are bordering on rude. If it was an outfit post, I'd never see someone comment something like "That's really nice but I'd never wear it" so it should be the same for makeup.
I totally understand that a lot of people aren't interested in the artsy side of makeup, but it shouldn't mean they have to dismiss it. I'm always shocked when I see some beauty YouTubers get comments like "you go out like that in public?!" xxx

  21. I really loved reading your answers & I found myself completely agreeing with everything you said at the end. I really enjoy the process of putting on make up, I find it super relaxing and I think it's always a great way to start the day. I always wear make up for me and not for anyone else! <3
