MAC Face and Body Foundation

Hi, loves! Today I have a review of the MAC Face and Body Foundation. I know this is a very popular foundation and there are many reviews on it, but I wanted to give my 2 cents. There are pictures and swatches below so I hope this is helpful. For reference, I wear Face & Body in the color C5. This is a long review as there are a few things I want to mention about this foundation. There's a summary at the end of the post that includes the most important information.

Finish
Since it's water-based, it looks very natural on the skin and photographs beautifully, never cakey. Also, it has no SPF which means no white cast on pictures. Great for flash photography. It has a dewy finish.

Coverage
The coverage is sheer/light. You can build it up but you will not get medium coverage out of this. It's suited for people who only want to cover minor redness or discoloration.

Longevity
For me the negative of Face & Body is the staying power. Now, I won't fault it on the finish because that is subjective. Everyone likes different finishes for their foundation and some are more suitable for certain skin types. However, for my normal skin, I find that Face & Body's dewy is too dewy. Even when I set this with powder it transfers a lot. Also, I once got a "you look shiny" comment while wearing this. I do like dewy finishes, I wish I could wear them, but I live in tropical humid weather so dewy becomes greasy very quickly. I bought this while I was on vacation and the weather was much drier there which is why I only noticed it when I got home. Also, dewy finishes usually mean average staying power because they don't "set".

Color Match
The shade range is fantastic! For those with pale skin, there is a White shade that you can wear alone or mix if you find that other foundations aren't light enough for you. The sheerness makes color matching very easy and forgiving. You can get away with a shade lighter or darker easily. The shade I have (C5) is actually my summer shade, I got it when I was really tanned. Yet I can still use it because it's sheer. It does make me darker, but it does so in a very natural way. My "winter/fall" shade would be around C3 or C4. Also, it oxidizes a little meaning it gets a bit darker after the initial application.

Application
I have used a stippling brush, a buffing brush and my fingers to apply this foundation and the results are always fantastic. This foundation always looks beautiful and natural!

Value
You get your money's worth because it has four times the usual foundation amount of 1 ounce (30 ml) and costs $33 USD. The bottle will last you forever. Face & Body has 4 ounces (120 ml).

Bare face (left) and Face & Body (right)
Summary:
  • Good foundation, definitely in my top 5 but not my favorite.
  • Beautiful dewy, natural finish. Sheer coverage (runny, water-based formula).
  • The staying power is good/average but that is common with dewy foundations because they don't "set".
  • It transfer a lot, even after being set with powder! (Again, common of dewy finish foundations)
  • I recommend it most for dry & normal skin types. Oily or combination may find that the dewy finish causes too much slip or an oily look.
  • Buildable to a light coverage so if you prefer more than that, F&B is not for you.
  • Photographs great! (No SPF)

    1. I've had this for about a year and a half and it's still perfect. Just like when I bought it. I think that since it's water based it will last a very long time. You just need to shake the bottle before every use. xx

  9. The before and after picture is a really good indication of the foundation itself~ so thanks for that. I was contemplating on trying this foundation because its water-based and i am after a more lighter foundation which will work with my oily complexion. However, after reading how it was too dewy for you normal skin, i realised that this foundation may not be the best for me because i hate my foundation sliding or melting off during the day. Thanks for this helpful review, i love you posts! ~ X x X x

  21. I just recently purchased this as my skin has been getting a bit more dry than usual with it being winter! And this gives me just the result I want, a bit dewy but still natural. I love it, but as usual for MAC, it's a bit orange - ugh. ;( So I love it, and definitely use it but I may no repurchase. Love your review

    1. I agree! They do run quite orange which suits my skintone fine but I imagine is a pain for more neutral skintones. xx

  22. I love foundations like this but transferring kills it for me as I wear glasses outdoors and I hate it when foundation comes off around my nose :(

  23. Thanks for another helpful review, Coco! I definitely know this foundation isn't for me (I have combo/oily skin and prefer medium coverage), but I still love hearing about the pros and cons of popular foundations like this :)

  26. Great review. I have heard a lot about this too, but I have never tried it before... And I don't think it would even work on me because it is way too hot where I live. You are gorgeous btw! The light coverage suits you well because you have nothing to cover. xx
