Review: Illamasqua Brink Lipstick

Illamasqua Brink Lipstick ($24£16)
I don't know if any of you remember, but I previously reviewed an Illamasqua Lipstick in Obey. I really disliked it. It was so dry that it was almost powdery. I had gotten Brink as well but was going to return it after having such a bad experience with Obey. I never got around to it and now it's too late to return it. And I feel like I'm stuck with a bad lipstick again because I'm disappointed with Brink. For reference, I don't have dry lips. I take care of them with lip scrubs, lip balms, and Shea butter.
Pigmentation
Brink is extremely pigmented and completely opaque. The color is a vibrant coral/orange. It's quite bold, but I think it's gorgeous. In person it doesn't look as peachy on the lips as it does in the picture. It's more orange/coral but it's hard to photograph.
Formula
Not as dry as Obey, but still really dry. Almost powdery. Powdery matte lipsticks accentuate imperfections too much. Plus, you have to apply more pressure and they're more likely to break. As you can see on the second picture, Brink did break after just two uses. This is my first broken lipstick bullet.
Overall
I really wanted to like this because the color is stunning. It's not the worst lipstick I've tried and it's not as bad as Obey, but I know that I won't be wearing it again. There are many great matte, vibrant formulas out there. This just looks too "textured" up close. I know some people like Illamasqua lipsticks and some people don't. Sadly, I haven't had good experiences with them :(

  1. My face when I saw the image of the broken lipstick O.O
That is such shame with such a well known brand to not only have produced one bad quality lipstick but two! I appreciate this post cause now I won't be buying any Illamasqua lipsticks anytime soon. I'm sorry about your lippie): Hopefully you'll find a similar color else where to replace it!

  9. I can't believe it broke! :/ I love a good matte lipstick, but it sounds like Brink is one to steer clear from. The color looks so beautiful though...

  12. Wow! Thanks for this review! The color looks so pretty on the tube but I have to agree. Its far too chalky which is a real bummer.

  13. As much as I love Illamasqua their lipsticks are a bit hit and miss for me. I absolutely love the colours Corrupt and Over, which even though are matte, are not too drying. But I also have Obey and it's so dry and unworkable. My Obey also broke, just like your Brink, but I melted the bottom with open flame (matchstick) and then stuck it back on and it's all fine now.
I think you'd really like Over, so give that one a try, the formula is definitely not too dry.

  14. Yeah I'm not a fan of the finish either. Have you tried layering a gloss over it to see if that helps?

    1. It does look much better but I don't wear lip gloss so I just end up skipping the whole combination altogether xx

  15. Coco, please tell me that you cut that lipstick in half just for that awesome shot!? it's a damn good picture, either way. better luck next time on the actual lipstick! i really am in love with that color but i see what you mean by it being "textured" up close.

  18. The colour is gorgeous but it looks rather odd on the lips, kinda patchy, that's too bad : / One would expect Illamasqua lipsticks to be top notch *sighs Thanks for the review darling xx

  19. I recently bought my first Illamasque product, which was a concealer, and loved it so really upset to hear about their lipsticks not being up to scratch. It looks so powdery!

  21. Illamasqua lipsticks are amazing in terms of color (apocalips, get your behind to the US!!) but the formula seems meh :( Seems I'm back to MAC..

  22. It's a shame that the formula of this wasn't so great, because the colour is really pretty!

  23. What a shame that these aren't as good quality they should be for Illamasqua!! They're not cheap.. so I too, would be disappointed :( xx

  24. I totally agree, I mean I love the colours Illamasqua produce but there is something about the lipstick formula, it leaves my lips looking dry and rough. Hence why even though I have wanted to but more Illamasqua lipsticks I haven't x
