Etude House Sweet Recipe Reviews and Swatches (+Giveaway)

Etude House Sweet Recipe Haul Review blog
Hi, beauties! Today's post is a long, picture-heavy mega review of all the products I purchased from the Etude House Sweet Recipe Collection. I posted a haul of these items a little while ago. I got them from eBay. There are online shops that sell Asian cosmetics internationally but I prefer shopping at eBay because they have competitive prices and most sellers offer free shipping without (or with a very low) purchase minimum. My Sweet Recipe Etude haul got a lot of hits from Google searches so I hope these reviews help anyone researching products before they go off and order online :). There's also a little giveaway at the end!
Etude House Sweet Recipe Baby Choux Mint Base Review Swatch
01. Mint Baby Choux Base ($14): The Baby Choux bases serve as primers to prep your skin for foundation or BB Cream. They come in three different colors (Mint, Berry, Peach). I got Mint to counteract redness. It comes with a spatula so you can scoop out the product hygienically. The texture is creamy but thin, reminiscent of whipped cream that has been left outside too long (lol, sorry for the imagery). It does counteract redness, and I find that it makes my face look paler/whiter instead of green/minty.
Although it costs around $14, the amount you get is very generous. This jar will seriously last me years. The packaging seems worth the $14 because the jar is made of frosted glass. Now on to the its actual performance: it does minimize my pores, smooth my face, and extend the wear of my foundation (but only by a little bit). It's more slippery than a silicone based primer which (strangely) made foundation look good but my cream blush look a bit cakey. It was only noticeable from a very close distance though.

Etude House Sweet Recipe Chocolate Highlighter Review
Etude House Sweet Recipe Chocolate Eyes Highlighter Swatches
02. Chocolate Eyes Eyeshadow Trio ($15): The adorable Chocolate Eyes compact is divided into three sections, a light beige (45% cacao), a medium warm brown in the middle (65% cacao), and a dark brown (98%). The texture for these three eyeshadows is very soft. They're all very pigmented. The only one that needs some building up (and is a tad drier in texture) is the darkest brown. Regardless, they're so pleasant to work with. This is a great neutral eyeshadow trio. The Chocolate Eyes trio was the hardest to track down on eBay and I can see why. When I first saw promo pics for this collection I thought this was a bronzer. I tried using it as a bronzer and it works well as one too. The darkest color was too dark for my skintone so I only swirled my brush in the two lightest colors.
03. White Chocolate Highlighter ($15): Adorable packaging, of course, but not very sturdy which seems really inconsistent because the packaging for the Baby Choux base feels very high-end. The Chocolate Highlighter comes in a cardboard box that feels like paper. Be careful when opening it! The powder feels soft and buttery. However, I don't think it's a great quality highlighter. Specially for the price. My problem with it is that upon application, it becomes powdery and has chunky glitter fallout. Definitely not a natural effect. Not all of the sections feel the same. The worst offender is first block on the left (your left).
Etude House Sweet Recipe Chocolate Smudge Liner Dark Chocolate review swatch
04. Chocolate Smudge Liner in Dark Chocolate ($8): If you were to use this eyeliner solely for making wings you might have a problem with transferring during application because it takes a long time to set. (Hooded eyes beware! It transfers on me too.) However, as the name implies, this liner is marketed for creating a smoky-smudgy liner look. It's meant to be smudged which explains why it's so incredibly creamy and why it gives you so much playtime before it sets. Once it sets, it lasts really long and it's quite water resistant. I don't smudge my gel liner often, I tend to wear cat-eyes and winged liner so the long setting time is a bit inconvenient for me (plus I have hooded eyes). However, I can't fault the liner because it was designed specifically for smudging. This liner also comes in a lighter Milk Chocolate color.
Etude House Sweet Recipe Ice Cream Nail Polish Mint Choco Chip Swatch Review
05. Ice Cream Nail Polish in Mintchoco Chip ($4): The nail polish is by far my favorite product from the collection. The packaging is too adorable for words. The first layer goes on sheer and a bit streaky but don't fret, by the second layer your nails will look milky and gorgeous. This is a good formula and it's easy to work with. Some of the glitters sink and some stay on top so the finished effect is very nice. Needless to say, I really love this color. These polishes also come in solid non-glitter colors.
Etude House Candy Stick Tinted Gloss in Strawberry Review
Etude House Candy Stick Tinted Gloss in Strawberry Swatch
06. Candy Stick Tinted Gloss in Strawberry ($7): This is a really cute tinted lip balm but out of all the products I've tried from this collection, the Candy Stick felt like the most lacking in quality. The twist up mechanism broke right away, it comes with very little product, and it feels like an average balm (not drying but not super moisturizing). It's a cute novelty item but I wouldn't order another one.
07. Cupcake All Over Color in Strawberry Chiffon ($9): The Cupcake All Over Colors come in a small tin packaging. They're creamy products meant for the lips, cheeks or eyes (as shown in Etude adverts). They're thinner and a bit oilier than most of my cheek/lip products. The consistency is similar to Revlon Photo Ready Cream blushes but I like the formula of the Cupcake All Over Color better. Strawberry Chiffon is sheer but buildable. It's easy to blend and served as a gorgeous blush. On the lips it's a bit drying but I still love how it looks. I haven't used it on the eyes and I don't think I will. Overall I like this product.
Summary/Roundup:
Skip It
Mint Baby Choux Base: It's nice, don't get me wrong, but there are better primers out there (color correcting or not).
Chocolate Highlighter: Skip it. I've tried better highlighters. Of course, totally worth it as a collector's item, it's adorable.
Candy Stick Tinted Gloss: Skip it. There's nothing that stands out to me about this product other than the packaging.
Try It
Cupcake All Over Color: Overall I like the formula and think the color is very pretty.
Chocolate Smudge Liner: It has it's flaws (mentioned above) but overall a good gel eyeliner. Again, the packaging is too adorable to pass up.
Have To Have It
Ice Cream Nail Polish: Looks gorgeous on the nails. I got a lot of compliments while wearing Mint Chocolate Chip. The bottles are something you'd want to have on display in your room at all times.
Chocolate Eyes Eyeshadow Trio: All of the three eyeshadows perform well. It's a very  versatile product (can be used as eyeshadows or bronzer) Plus, it looks delicious!

Final Thoughts:
I consider all the items to range from good to average. Nothing in here is bad nor is it blow-me-away amazing. For me, the worst performing item is the Chocolate Highlighter (or the Candy Stick Gloss). As a whole, I think it's a good collection. The packaging is so well thought out and so incredibly adorable that I, personally, don't mind paying a bit more for the "cute factor". Of course, if the products were terrible I would feel as if I had wasted my money and even the cutest packaging in the world couldn't save them. Thankfully, that's not the case. I'm happy with my Sweet Recipe purchase.
Where To Buy:
There is a bit of a frenzy on eBay over the Sweet Recipe collection. Items like the Chocolate Eyes and the Ice Cream Polishes go out of stock and come back a few days later. As always, there are people trying to rip off buyers by overpricing coveted items. Two weeks ago I saw listings charging $30+ for the Chocolate Eyes! Also, two weeks ago I saw the Ice Cream Polishes retailing for $3 and they have since gone up to $5-8 each. The seller I bought from was HKC (which I recommend). The online retailer KollectionK also sells Etude House Sweet Recipe items and ships internationally. I just placed an order with KollectionK a few days ago so I can't vouch for them yet.
Giveaway:
Phew, now on to the giveaway!! I'm giving away a brand new Etude House Chocolate Eyes palette. The rules are the usual: be a follower of my blog (via GFC or Bloglovin') and don't enter with fake/giveaway accounts. The giveaway is international! It ends on May 14th. :) Good luck! It's a shame about the Candy Stick gloss, I have the Tony Moly Petite Bunny Gloss Bars (mouthful or what?) which are similar and think they're fab, have you tried them?

  6. This is too cute for words! Etude House is by far one of my favorite non-Europe brands and it really sucks that I'm on a shopping diet right now, but they always come out with the cutest stuff so oh well. And I've seen these polishes on other blogs too, really struggling with my 'diet' here... I just want oneeee :(

The minty face primer looked so good, but I think I'll skip on this one. I hear that smashbox makes an excellent colored primer! The nail polish is just so cute! Agh! Great review!
