Weekly Beauty Question #1

I asked in my Sunday Chit Chat post if you'd be interested in participating in a beauty survey. Thankfully, a lot of you said yes! :) I love reader interaction and enjoy reading your opinions. From now on I will be posting a weekly beauty-related question for anyone to answer. Feel free to share your experiences in the comments. I look forward to reading them!

Q: Are there any hyped-up beauty products you dislike? Alternatively, any unpopular products you really love?

My Answer: Before trying any myself, I had an aversion to MAC foundations because they have a bad reputation of causing skin to break out. After trying Pro Longwear and Face & Body, I can say that I love MAC foundations! In terms of hyped-up products I dislike, I was a bit disappointed with the Maybelline Color Tattoos. At least the matte ones. I like Fiercy & Tangy (the orange one) but I found Edgy Emerald very patchy. Tough as Taupe is not as easy to blend as I would like. I haven't tried the shimmery/metallic ones (which are the most popular) so the formula might be better on those. I just wish they were easier to blend and looked smoother on the lids.

  1. I have never been a fan of BB creams. I tried many and didn't like a single one!

    1. I second that! The Maybelline BB cream was pretty good, but I think in general I just want WAY more coverage than any BB cream is going to offer! When they roll out BB Foundation, I'm in! ;)

    2. Hahaha, I second that. I've liked the ones I've tried so far (Skin 79 and L'Oreal's) but I'd like just a bit more coverage without sacrificing the skin benefits xx

  2. I tend to be very easily pleased when it comes to products, although I do wish some of the drugstore BB creams came in lighter shades, I know it's not always possible but most of them are super orange on me!

  3. Are there any hyped-up beauty products you dislike? I was completely disappointed in Benefit's They're Real mascara! I received a sample from Sephora for my birthday and am forcing myself to use it. It makes my lashes look horribly spidery and flakes like crazy.

Any unpopular products you really love? I love the Maybelline Dream Bouncy blushes! A lot of people complain that they aren't pigmented but if you try the shade Hot Tamale you'd be surprised.

    1. They're Real is so incredibly hyped! I wish I had a sample so I could try it out for myself.

  4. Hyped-up I dislike: MUA cosmetics eyeshadow palettes, everybody seem to compare them to high end brands but they fall really short.
Unpopular I love: Jordana cosmetics has amazing products, my latest acquisition the Best Lash mascara is wonderful and it costs only 2.99, nothing can beat that!
Love this kind of posts Coco : ) Looking forward to next week's beauty question xx

    1. Jordana has great eyeliners and lip liners!!! I love stocking up on their lip liners!

I haven't tried MUA eyeshadows sadly (or thankfully maybe I should say) but I tried their cream blushers and found them okay but patchy. I thought their face powder was stiff and chalky. Their eyeliners smudge and smear in seconds. And out of the 4 lipsticks I tried, I liked 2. I guess you can say I'm not impressed, haha

  5. I agree with the Color Tattoos! I was really impressed the first time I bought them, but then I tried other cream eyeshadows (namely the paint pots from MAC) and they just didn't really compare. I realize that MAC is a step up from Maybelline, but I don't think that they live up to the hype anymore.

    1. Paint Pots are just much easier to work with. So are other cream shadows from across the board (Milani, Bobbi Brown, Calvin Klein, Make Up For Ever, etc.) I think they're good for the price but I reach for other products instead of the Color Tattoos every time because application is better.

  6. I agree with Noire.. MUA as a brand is so hyped up, and a lot of their products in my opinion are poor quality. Their new pro range, and their lipsticks are the only products I like. I suppose it's another example of where cheap doesn't necessarily mean good.

  7. I was really disappointed by Benefit's Porefessional Primer, it made my dry patches super exaggerated. As for hyped up products I really love the 217 brush from MAC, it exceeded my expectations!

  8. Hyped-up products: I agree with CC on Benefit's They're real, it made my lashes clumpy, barely gave any length and it was a nightmare to remove. Also NYX Round Lipsticks, the ones I've tried are so pigmented they stain my lips and that stain is almost impossible to remove and they're a bit too creamy for my taste, I prefer something matter that doesn't move that much.
Unpopular products: I don't hear many people talking about Prestige's Total Intensity eyeliners and they're amazing! Creamy, very pigmented and long-lasting. Essence's Stay With Me lipglosses are also great, non-sticky and quite pigmented, love them!

    1. I really like the NYX Round Lipsticks but they're on the thin side so I see how they may not be your preference.
I tried an Essence Stay With Me Gloss recently and I liked it a lot (and I don't normally wear lip gloss!)

  9. I don't particularly like Essie polishes. Some of them take 3 coats to become opaque and Essies polishes seem to chip more, even with a top coat. I like the fast drying time but it's frustrating otherwise.

I also really like MAC lip glasses, even though everyone else seems to hate them because of the tackiness. I don't care if it's tacky - if it's pretty and lasts long then I like! :D And they do.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think only a handful of Essie shades are worth the price tag. Most are so sheer! I much prefer China Glaze because most of their polishes are opaque and cheaper
      xx

  10. I agree with Ann Oh - not a fan of Essie polishes! At least not the 'proper' ones. They released a diffusion line in the UK last year with a slightly wider brush and opaque formula, and those are quite good - but I can't get on with the sheer, watery formula and skinny little brushes on the normal ones.

Also not a fan of MAC, just overall as a brand. Totally don't 'get' them.

Now I'm having a hard time thinking of which underrated products I've really liked.. maybe Illamasqua Skin Base. LOTS of people don't like it at all but I really love it.

    1. Aww, I really didn't like the Skin Base. Not for my skin type I think xx

  11. I have heard that MAC foundations have a tendency to break you out - so I've never even considered trying them! The Maybelline Color Tattoos dry out really easily - I love my bronze one but the texture has hardened considerably and it gets flaky on my brush.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I am not a fan of the Maybelline the rocket volum mascara which many people seem to love, I find it really clumps my lashes :(
However I think that natural collection lipsticks are seriously under rated! I only own one but I love it and will definitely be getting more soon :D xxx

  13. Ooo I really like this idea! What a great little series... Hmm... I really disliked the MAC Mineralize skinfinish natural. People seem to love em, but I just found it made me look very cakey and much prefer the Rimmel Stay Matte powders to set my make up (and for £1.99 you can't complain!)
As for products that I like but nobody else does... That is a toughie! I really like MUA palettes but see them getting a bit of hate sometimes :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm always afraid of the Mineralize Skinfishes because I feel as if they will make me look glittery. That might be an unfounded fear, I'd need to try them out for myself :P

      Delete
    2. Hey M try using the mineralized natural with a really loose and not dense powder brush! I used to dislike it too because I used it with a dense kabuki brush, but i think that's why people like it so much. The product is really versatile. If I can't be bothered with foundation or bbcream i'll just swirl my dense brush in the mineralized skin finish natural and it'll give me quite a bit of coverage!

  14. Good questions! I personally think the Lush Emotional Brilliance line has been totally under-hyped. I was lucky enough to be gifted several Emotional Brilliance items from a friend and I've truly been loving them. Very rich and pigmented and some lovely shades! Definitely think they don't get enough love :)

And in terms of over-hyped, I've never fallen for the high-end concealer/highlighting pens like YSL Touche Eclat. I find they don't do much for my complexion and the $50 price tags are pretty crazy!

Looking forward to your next question! xo

    1. Thanks for answering! :) I don't see enough reviews on Lush's makeup line. I wish it had a bit more exposure because I'd always been interested in it. Although I'm a bit wary because of the non-traditional packaging (that's just me being silly I guess)

  15. What a great idea for a post! I think YSL mascaras are not worth their money but I really like everything from the German drugstore DM which has several own brands which all produce really good stuff for little money :)

  16. You need to try "Bad To The Bronze" Color Tattoo before you completely make up your mind on them! Lol in my opinion it's phenom. As for hyped up products I dislike I'd have to say BB Cream, I only tried one (The Maybelline) but it made my skin breakout like crazy! Boooo:(

  18. I really don't like Mac foundation. Everyone seems to rave about it but I found that during the day it went patchy and just made my face look dirty.

I think Natural Collection is so underrated, I use their powder and lipsticks all the time and for £1.99 you can't go wrong. I think people get put off cos they're so cheap.

  19. YSL's Le Touche Éclat was a big disappointment. I was so hyped when I heard about it and ran to get it. Same goes for the Becca Radiant Skin Foundations because I loved her Luminous Skin Founadtion. BTW, I wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't find a color match in the Radiant line. She has this weird gap in shades. The Lights are too creamy white yellow, the Medium shades are a distinct olivey-tan brown shade. She doesn't really have a true light-medium shade range. If you haven't tried it already, maybe try Nude and Olive, but I think they would be too dark on you. They were for me.

    1. woops forgot to mention that I didn't like Becca's Radiant drywall like texture and I have OILY skin. Have you thought about Origins? Not the sexiest of foundations but the finish is really nice and it's easily have the price of the higher end ones, but just as good and better than some.

      Delete
    2. I haven't tried Nude yet. I will try it still because well, it's a free sample, I have nothing to lose but I'm not at my tannest right now so I think it'll probably be too dark. I'll grab a sample of Origins's too. Thanks for recommending!

  20. Oww I really want to try the Maybelline colour tattoos, they look like an affordable version of Mac paint pots.
I have to say I've only ever tried the Prolongwear foundation from Mac but I'm not a huge fan :/

  21. I find so much stuff hyped up especially when all the girls get paid to talk about it (sad but true), so I usually try things out for myself. I think a lot of 'cheap' drugstore makeup can be underrated like Wet N' Wild makeup! - Boho Vanity

    ReplyDelete
  22. The one that still gets me (because I'm still trying to use it up) is the Revlon ColorStay foundation... hate it hate it hate it!! It's not the worst thing ever (obviously since I wear it to use it up) but all of the hype made a C+/B- product seem like an A++. And something that's unpopular that I love? Hmmm... floss? Hahaha that's really the only thing I can think of but seriously I don't know how people don't floss their teeth!! I can't go a day without it.

    1. Hahaha, floss :)
I tried the ColorStay yeeeaars ago. (In highschool, ok, not that long ago). Back then I hated it because of the ridiculous amount of flashback it gave in pictures. Other than that I don't remember disliking anything else about it. Although back then I had just started getting into foundations so I had nothing else to compare it to. I'd like to try it again to see what I think of it now.

    2. I love Revlon Colorstay... at first I was using the oily/combination version and really found it too heavy but I still liked the coverage it gave (I have a lot of acne scarring). However now I'm using the normal/dry skin version which is much easier to work with, doesn't feel as heavy but still covers really well. I would only recommend Colorstay if you want pretty full coverage though. I do prefer it over some of my pricier foundations!

  23. Good question! Not really into BB creams these days, owing to the fact that they make me look super pale and sometimes go ashy on me. Benefit's mascaras are also quite hyped up, and honestly, Benefit's BadGal Lash (when photographed) looks the same as Cover Girl's Lash Blast Fusion.

  24. Great question.. I think MUA eyeshadows are not amazing as everyone says... also the porefessional was such a turn off .. and expensive!

    1. I thought the Porefessional was good but nothing special. To me it worked just as well as any Silicone primer so I don't know why it's so expensive! xxx

  25. I have recently tried the apocalips and I am not a fan! Nor did I think theBalm's eye shadows were that amazing!
In terms of underhyped, I can't really think of any!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm not a fan of Rimmel or Maybelline Mascaras, but I've really only tried a couple from each brand so I'm not sure I can generalise. I haven't found a decent BB cream either.
Covergirls Line Exact Liquid Liner doesn't get a good wrap, not that I've seen, but I think it's fantastic!

  27. I think Clarins Flash Balm is pretty overrated, it's nice and all but well it's not THAT good ;)

  28. I couldn't agree with your answer more!
I was so afraid of mac foundations and now my top two are Matchmaster and Studio Fix Fluid, they don't break me out and they match my skin perfectly!
And I completely agree with the color tattoos, some people love them... but I would much rather MAC Paint Pots and Benefit Creaseless Creams.

  29. I'm really not a fan of the Colour Tattoos either! I have Permanent Taupe (same as Tough as Taupe) and I didn't think it was creamy or blendable and it just didn't sit right.

Other hyped up products I haven't been impressed with are the Revlon Lip Butters, most people love them but I just didn't get on with the ones I bought. Didn't love Benefit's Porefessional either!

  30. I love the MAC foundations as well! Pro-Longwear is literally all I wear these days. And I agree, the color tattoos are quite patchy. I got a metallic one in Barely Branded which seemed promising, but I think I'll have to play with it some more to figure out how best to apply it. Can't think of any disliked products that I like, but I'm sure I'll think of something as soon as I hit "publish"! x
