Review: Rimmel Apocalips in Big Bang

rimmel apocalips big bang
Hi, lovelies! Today I'm reviewing a product that has been reviewed countless times so I'm sorry if you're tired of hearing about it. :) Hopefully my post will provide a different insight because this is not going to be a rave review. I feel a bit bad saying that I don't like this product because it was kindly sent to me during a swap. However, I specifically asked her for a Rimmel Apocalips so it's not her fault at all (even if I hadn't asked for it, it still wouldn't be her fault that I didn't like it). Also, my issues with this product are not about it's quality per se. Now that that has been clarified, here are my thoughts on it...

When I first saw the Rimmel Apocalips popping up on the blogsphere I was under the impression they were liquid lipsticks. My impression was that they were lip colors in liquid form that dried to a matte or semi-matte finish. Much like the Guerlain Rouge G de Guerlain L'Extrait, the Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipsticks, or the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams. However, the Apocalips turned out to be really shiny and completely opaque lip glosses. Now, I don't tend to wear lip gloss often and I prefer matte finishes. So as you can imagine, the Apocalips are not the type of product targeted for my preference.
That said, my gripe with the Apocalips formula is that it's not easy to wear (at least for me). Lip gloss is very wet, it smears, and transfers easily. The thing is that most lip glosses are somewhat sheer, making them easy to wear and forgiving (if they bleed or go outside your lip lines chances are no one's going to notice). However, the Apocalips are super opaque so if it smears a bit it'll go everywhere. Which reminds me of Jessica's review where she says it transferred to her teeth during an interview (what a nightmare!) Of course, Big Bang is such a bright stand out red. A safer neutral color would be more forgiving. Big Bang does leave a long lasting stain after the shine is gone which is great, but I prefer a lip product that I don't have to worry about too much. Of course you can always blot it so that's a way of making it work if you prefer a matte finish.

In summary, the Apocalips formula has a really amazing quality: highly pigmented, applies smoothly, the applicator is great and so is the packaging. Plus, they're really affordable! However, it's not what I initially thought it would be. I'm still very grateful that I got to try it :) (Especially since these aren't out in the U.S. yet!) If you prefer shiny finishes and if you wear lip gloss often then you'll probably love this. Let me know your thoughts on them if you've tried any.

PRODUCT(S) MENTIONED: Rimmel Apocalips in Big Bang (£4.99), Guerlain Rouge G de Guerlain L'Extrait (review).

  1. It looks great on you! One of the reasons I didn't run out and buy this product is because I've heard it smears and transferes which isn't a good look lol! New follower:)

    1. Yes, beside the review mentioned (Jessica's) I also read one that said that she wore it on a night out and it was always smearing on her cocktails. xx

    2. Make Up For Ever Lip Line Perfector is what keeps lipstick from travelling...as for transferring...that's par for the course lol!

  2. I really love Rimmel Apocalips! I have them in Celestial and Big Bang :) Big Bang is such a gorgeous colour but I find that it stains so much haha not good when you're not that great applying lip lacquers just like me! I really love the colour though, and it suits you really well :)

    Great post!

  3. I thought they dried to a matte finish as well. Thanks for putting that into perspective with this review! Now I don't feel as jealous that we can't get these in the US haha :)

    1. I would describe it more as a gloss that loses its shine and you're left with a stain. For me it didn't dry to a matte finish because it stayed shiny for at least 30 mins xx

  4. You've hit the nail on the head with this one. I bought Stellar when they first came out and regretted it immediately, it got all over the damn place - I was out having cocktails and my straw looked as if I'd coated it in the stuff. Not attractive. It's a shame because they're really nice shades! xx

    1. Haha, I had similar experiences! They're definitely nice product but not everyone's style I guess

  5. I'm sure in most of the reviews I've read they say it dries to a semi-matte finish. Now I'm feeling a bit mislead, haha! I love everything about these Apocalips but like you I'm not a lipgloss fan and prefer liquid lipsticks that aren't so glossy. Thanks for the honest review! I'll still ogle these but maybe I won't the bolder lips :)

    1. Haha, lip products can work differently on everyone. Maybe if my lips were a bit drier I'd feel it more matte. It does lose it's shine and leave a matte stain behind eventually, but not almost immediately upon application like all the liquid lipsticks I've tried which is why I'd consider the Apocalips to be more of an opaque gloss than a liquid lipstick. The neutral colors must be easier to wear for sure :)

  6. Thank you for the honest review! The color is beautiful on you and in the package, but I won't be rushing to buy this if and when it debuts in the US. I'm not a huge lipgloss wearer, and I especially hate lipglosses that smear everywhere.

  7. Such a shame this didn't work for you :( I haven't had any problems with Big Bang yet, but I only apply a very thin coat to my lips? It looks gorgeously glossy on you though, even if you don't like wearing glosses. xxx

    1. I do love the look! But like I said I'm loyal to my mattes so this is a bit out of my comfort zone in terms of finish xx

  8. Oh! It's nice to read a different Apocalips perspective. I have Stellar and I personally love it, cons or no cons, maybe I am biased lol.

  9. I'm quite glad I didn't buy into the hype and get them as soon as they came out because I hate any lip product that moves and transfers easily. Matte lips FTW! Haha

  10. Oh wow thank you so much for this review Coco!! I was under the EXACT same impression as you were as to what type of product these were... I was way off apparently haha! While this looks gorgeous and I don't mind lipglosses (so long as I have my hair tied back) I just couldn't handle fearing that my lips had smudged or that such an opaque color was all over my teeth (honestly one of my biggest nightmares hahah!!).

  13. Great review :) I've steered clear of them for that very reason, I had a suspision that they would be quite wet and smudgy, so I'm glad I didn't pick it up! Xx

  15. I was thinking about getting one this until I saw the finish on the lips. I'm not a shiny lipstick person either but I had to admit that the colours are really pretty and everyone says amazing things about them.

  16. I haven't tried these but I was really keen to however after reading this review I'm now in two minds. I want something that isn't going to move around and I too thought they would be matte once they dried...hmm!
Great honest review here :) loving your blog missy!

  19. Hey hun, not sure if you saw my tweet but I hope things are going better for you! You look so gorgeous in red, I don't think I could pull off this color though. I am in love with the NYX Lip Creams so I might have to try an Apocalips when they (hopefully) make it to the U.S. xx

  20. God I hated this too! I tried Big Bang as well, and my post on why I didn't like it is here if you want to have a nose: http://blotandreapply.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/apocalips-apocamiss-more-like.html

At least the shade looks great with your skin!

  24. I totally agree with them getting everywhere! I have to scrape the product out into the inside of the tube and just use the tiniest bit (normally the bit that's left in that little dip thing in the wand). I like it, but I'd like it more if you didn't have to go to the trouble of taking half the product off the wand! I've got Stella and I probably will buy one or two more.

  25. Rimmel lip products are always a miss for me because I can't stand the scent :/ I too like most people thought these dried matte! Guess they aren't the Hourglass dupe I believed, oh well x

  28. This looks gorgeous on you! I agree these can easily transfer but I usually blot them out to get rid of that super glossy finish and I find that helps :)

  29. Great review Coco, soooo agreed with you, they transfer to everything and they aren’t long lasting at all... the smell isn’t very pleasant either :( I bought lots before trying them, not my best purchase heheheh.

  31. I'm dying to try these out. Most red lipsticks or gloss tend to end up on my teeth so I'm always checking which is annoying.

  32. The color looks beautiful on you! Too bad the formula is runny -- thanks for sharing that tho! PS: Te ves bella como siempre!

  33. Oh my... well, I know this might be a good alternative to the Russian Red lipglass? I would much prefer to wear a lipstick with a glossy finish, but I know some people who see lipglosses are kinder alternatives that are easier to wear and just look better. Thanks for the heads up. I'm disappointed that they don't dry to a semi matte finish but I'm sure other people will find this product absolutely amazing! Great review Coco!! x

  38. Definitely a striking shade that looks lovely on you, but I agree- some products are too high maintenance to be worth it. Sorry you weren't happy with the formula, but at least you look great wearing it! :)

  40. It's beautiful.. I have the same and Celestial too.
My lips must be very dry cause it didnt transfer on me, I guess my lips sucked all the product cause it was very hard to get rid of it. However I used it the last weekend on a model and it transfered to her teeth!

  46. I'm not huge on lip glosses (they are my least liked lip product) so I'm not sure whether I'll like these (notwithstanding the fact I have enough lip products to last me the next 35 years). But the colour looks amazing on you! Such a beautiful red :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. I love glosses that are forgiving so I probably wouldn't ever reach for these. Highly pigmented works best for me when it's in a matte format and doesn't transfer easily, causing embarassing mishaps, lol! If I can't apply the gloss without a mirror, I'm probably skipping it! I like an easy-going gloss. :) It does look GORGE on you, though!

  48. Thanks for the mention! I definitely wont be rushing out for this again xx

  49. I have this too and I am too scared to wear it! I have worn it for a video but apart from that it makes me nervous. I was pleasantly surprised when I wore it for a few hours and I didn't have any bleeding. I have a nude shade also which somehow managed to get all over my teeth too! I don't know what it is about these!
