Paul & Joe Pressed Powder Compact in Medium 03

paul and joe beaute pressed powder compact medium 03
Hi, lovelies! Today I have my second Paul & Joe Beaute product review. I previously featured their Peaches and Cream Cheek Color on my blog (click here if you want to read that review). The product I will be talking about today is their Pressed Powder in the color Medium 03. To clarify, the Pressed Powder refill pan is sold separately from the pink powder compact. They come safely packaged in beautiful boxes (which I will show you in later posts; yes, I've kept them!) and you have to insert the powder pan into the compact yourself. The powder consists of a large matte side and a smaller shimmery side.

Texture
The Paul & Joe Pressed Powder is so finely milled. It's a pleasure to apply. It doesn't look heavy or cakey on the face at all. The shimmery side works as a subtle highlighter. If you swirl your brush in the entire thing and use a mixture of the two powders, you still get a subtle effect on the face. It doesn't look obvious or "disco ball like", you can only see the shimmer in sunlight.
Coverage
I bought this expecting it to be a typical pressed powder but it's not. I think a more accurate description of it would be a Pressed Setting Powder because it's really fine and has little coverage. The Pressed Powder comes in only 4 shades but since the coverage is so light it makes shade matching quite forgiving. I very much consider this a semi-translucent setting powder. So don't expect this to replace your pigmented pressed powders.
Formula
This powder blends like a dream and melts into the skin. It helps set foundation, increases its staying power, makes your face feel soft, and combats shine. It doesn't really add coverage. It's more of a setting powder (used to mattify). I take a medium domed face brush (the Sedona Lace FB 05, "equivalent" of a MAC 109 brush) and apply the matte side all over my face. Then I take the shimmery side and apply it as a highlight on the top of my cheekbones. Using both sides swirled together adds a bit of radiance to the face without being overboard glittery.
Overall
This product is not what I was expecting it to be (a full/medium coverage pressed powder, think L'Oreal True Match Powder or MAC Studio Fix Powder, etc.) but somehow I ended up loving it. That's because I highly enjoy setting powders. Previously I had been using the Laura Mercier and MAC Loose Setting Powders. However, I have been reaching for the Paul & Joe Pressed Powder instead because it has the characteristics of a loose setting powder in a more convenient (pressed) form. I suspect the very popular Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder might work in a very similar way. I don't own that one but if I end up getting it I will definitely compare the two. The Paul & Joe Pressed Powder is expensive but it has become such a well-loved beauty product that I would repurchase it when/if I ran out.

Like I mentioned in my previous P&J post, you can get their products from Urban Outfitters and Beautyhabit (if you live in the U.S. or U.S. territories). If you're from the U.K. you can get them from Asos (they ship internationally). They're also sold on Amazon (Dermstore). I know this was a lengthy post but Paul & Joe is a brand that is not massively available at big retailers (like Sephora, Ulta, Debenhams, etc.) so reviews are a bit harder to come by. Have a lovely week!

  2. There's a Paul and Joe counter at the mall near my place; I've only tried a foundation sample and I was really amazed by the quality. Sadly, I already have a HG setting powder (I like MUFE's HD one) but your lovely review has only convinced me to get something from P&J soon! x

  3. This looks so pretty, I would not have picked it to be a setting powder, though (apart from the name). I'm sure it would work nicely as a bronzer/ highlighter duo too. xx

  6. Wow, Paul & Joe packaging is always so lovely! Glad to hear you ended up liking it, even though it wasn't quite what you expected! I really like the idea of including a touch of highlighter along with the setting powder :)

  9. The compact case is really pretty. I'm glad you liked product, I'd have been seriously disappointed that it wasn't even medium coverage, especially for that price! It's nice though that they offer refils so you don't have to spend again on the packaging : ) Thanks for the review Coco xx

    1. I was definitely taken aback at first but then I reminded myself that I've paid that much for a setting powder before so there's not much difference. I also noted that P&J doesn't really describe the coverage of this product so it wasn't like they were misleading (which is something I dislike and many companies do). xx

  10. It's beautiful and I love the packaging! I am not really into full coverage powders as I only want them to set my make up but now that I have massive breakouts in my cchin I might try loreal true match :)

  11. The outer packaging is so pretty and feminine. And I love that it has a tiny piece of shimmer to it. Perfect for to go makeup. I don't think I've seen these at UO yet. They definitely look like something I'd want to try.

Btw, thanks for stopping by my site. :D

  12. Paul and Joe packaging is one of my favourites. I think buying the product separate from the compact is pretty new as they didn't offer that when I bought some bits from there last year. I really like the concept though, makes refills much easier!

  13. Paul and Joe packaing, once again gorgeous as always. I love that you describe it that it just melts into the skin. It looks like it would give a nice healthy glow to the skin, not taking away anything from your foundation. Great review babe xo
