Review: Maybelline Volum'Express The Falsies Flared Mascara

I don't usually review mascaras on my blog and I'm not exactly sure why. Maybe it's because I try so many and once I've used them up I forget to feature them on my blog. To be honest I still haven't found my absolute favorite "HG" mascara. The closest I've come is the L'Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black or the Tarina Tarantino Fleur de Lash Faceted. The latter costs about $20 dollars which puts me off from repurchasing. Tarina Tarantino is no longer sold at Sephora and the shipping rates to Puerto Rico on the TT website are too high. Long story short, I don't think I'll be repurchasing Fleur de Lash anytime soon (which is sad because I adore it). This means I'm still on the lookout for "the one", my absolute favorite mascara.
Another bit of mascara history (I could talk about mascaras for ages), I also really love Bad Gal Lash from Benefit. Again, it's a really expensive mascara so it's out of the running for now (plus I have a love-hate relationship with it's humongous brush). I'm strictly looking for a drugstore mascara. I will gladly pay high-end prices for foundations, powders, eyeshadows, etc. because they can last me years. Not mascaras though, 4 to 6 months and I already have to replace them. I really like rubber brushes and wet formulas but my favorite combination is a traditional fiber brush paired with a drier formulation. I'm more of a volumizing girl instead of lengthening. That said, there are some lengthening mascaras I do enjoy (the Collection 2000 Super Size and Jordana Best Lash being two of them).
Now that all that ramble is out of the way, let me review the mascara at hand: the Maybelline Volum'Express The Falsies Flared. I got this because Maybelline mascaras are extremely popular and well-praised, The Falsies being no exception. I actually prefer Cover Girl and L'Oreal mascaras but I decided to give this a shot anyways. The formula is normal-dry and the wand is a traditional fiber one (with a slight curve). On my lashes, The Falsies Flared doesn't build up too well. It also makes my lashes slightly crunchy. I find the application to be tricky because of the flexible/bendy head. It's a love-hate thing. I'm more on the hate camp because, after over a month of usage, I still find myself wishing the wand was stiff and didn't have that flexibility "dent" near the tip.

The ironic thing is that, even though this mascara is not one I would repurchase, it's the one that gets me the most compliments (both offline and on). Seriously, it never fails, which is why I wish I liked it better because the final effect is very nice. If you have similar mascara preferences, let me know which one is your favorite in the comments! :)

  1. It looks rather natural on you, which is good if that's the look you're going for haha
I've never tried Maybelline mascaras, for some reason all of the praise they get turns me off from trying them.
Like you, I think a drier formula and a traditional brush works best for me yet I always seem to get lured in by the rubber ones lol

  2. It does look really nice on you. I recently ran out of my beloved L'oreal Volume Million Lashes mascara (HG, have never strayed from it before since finding it as it beats all the others into submission), so I decided to pick up The Falsies to see what all the fuss was about. I've just got the normal version but I can't say I'm a fan - it's ok, but I found that it was pretty dry from the moment I opened it. I also find it quite clumpy, whereas I prefer something a lot smoother and more natural looking.

    1. It can definitely clump since it's so dry. I found it soo crispy on my lashes. I have tried the Voluminous Million Lashes too, I liked it but still liked the Original Voluminous a bit better xx

  4. It does look pretty on you! I hate how it looks on me and I don't really like the formula.. it's a bit too watery for me :(

  6. I don't like the falsies line of mascaras but for some reason everyone asks about it when I do have it on! Lol! I LOVE the Maybelline One by One, it gives me lots of length and just enough volume without the feeling of 'hard lashes'. It can be built up if you are fast enough otherwise gets clumpy. It also smells like rose but not overwhelming! Also, the Revlon Grow Luscious Plumping version is my favorite for definition! I have a review up on my blog if you wanna see!

    1. Haha so funny that the same thing happened to us. The Grow Luscious is very popular. I'll have to try that one too :)

  7. I've not tried this although I did pick up the Rocket Volume one which didn't leave me very impressed. I tend to not buy lengthening mascaras as my lashes are quite long so all I look for is a bit of lift for them. I think so far my favourite has been the No7 Lash Adapt mascara.

This does look really nice and natural on you though, I can see why you get the compliments.

  8. I love this mascara! I have the waterproof version, and its definitely one of the best drugstore mascaras I've tried!

  9. I really loved this mascara when I had it but, as I think most girls are, I'm a mascara hopper!! I don't know that I've ever stuck with one consistently (except for one from CG that was my HG bottom last mascara... I'll never understand why they discontinued that beauty!!)!

  10. Great review! I've bought this mascara twice and while I didn't love it for the reasons you mentioned, I ended up buying it again because I did get so many compliments on it.

  11. Normally I prefer L´Oréal mascaras, too but Maybelline are quite good for what they cost. At the moment I have 2 more mascaras I still have to try and 3 I´m currently using so no new mascara for me this year xD

  12. I really like Maybelline mascaras, maybe because I like a more dry formula. I have tried the waterproof version of this and it lasts all day without flaking :)

  14. The overall effect of this mascara on your lashes is great and something I would like to achieve from mascaras too. Shame about the tricky application. Not no sweat, no gain right? :) I've never tried any mascaras from Maybelline before but perhaps I should give this a go soon. I love Benefit Bad Gal Lash mascara too. So far it's my absolute go to mascara. It never fails but like you I have a love/hate relationship with it when I accidentally poke myself in the eye. Haha. All for beauty eh? :D

  15. I happen to enjoy wearing the falsies mascara but one of my all time favorite drugstore mascaras is Loreal's original Voluminous mascara; it has natural rather than rubber bristles which I prefer and volumizes more than it lengthens!

  16. I wasn't really a fan of these mascara - I didn't like how flexible the wand was and I just didn't overall like the effect on my lashes :/

  17. I love the LOREAL voluminous too although it can be annoying at first since it works best after being open a bit. I tried the falsies as well and thought it was ok. Nothing I would repurchase. I LOVE Makeup Forever smokey lash but it dries out so quickly ~ a month, so I can't justify purchasing it all the time. I love Prestige My Blackest Lashes. Cheap and gives really great volume!

  18. I absolutely hated this mascara! It never went on my lashes right and it was as clumpy as can be. I don't know if I got a bad tube or something, but this is hands down the worst mascara I've ever tried. I'm really liking Maybelline's The Rocket Mascara, also Maybelline's Illegal Length is really good. I love Maybelline mascaras, just this one was terrible.

  19. I love that Maybelline mascara, I also reviewed it on my blog last month where I compared it to my all time HG mascara L'oreal Voluminous million lashes.

  20. My HG mascara is Max Factor 2000 Calorie, I've seriously never used anything so amazing. I usually like the Falsies Flared, but it looks much different on my lashes! That's why I believe mascaras are a bit like foundations, you really have to try them for yourself.

  22. I just recently purchased this because I like the regular Falsies mascara and was hoping this would be just as good. Unfortunately for me this mascara did not work out. I have to combine this with another mascara to get any length or volume. I think from now on I'm sticking with the regular Maybelline Falsies.

    1. Seems like quite a few people in this post did't like the Flared either. The original doesn't make your lashes crispy right?

  23. I haven't got the Falsies but i'm really enjoying another Maybelline mascara - the Magnum Volum' Express; it's an Asia exclusive apparently but it's really really good, so I'll have to write something up. I really want to try L'Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black because of it's cult-fave status though.

  24. Your before and after photos are really helpful! This mascara looks really natural but also makes the lashes 'visible' for the lack of a better word. :-) Will definitely pick it up next! Have you given Rimmel Scandaleyes a try? xx

  26. I had the regular falsies and had the same issues that you did plus the wand is so huge that it made the application really difficult on my small eyes. As for mascaras I won't look any further, I found everything I wanted in the Jordana Best Lash Extreme and will never look back. If they discontinue that one I'd be in serious trouble! ^^

  27. It looks really pretty and natural on you. Shame it makes your lashes crispy! We don't get the flared version here, so I got myself the original waterproof formula. Now I'm on my 2nd tube, I love it that much! Lasts throughout the day with no flaking, and unlike this flared version, it never made my lashes crisp. The formula was more gel-like too. I guess waterproof formulations are different. Also, I found that if you let it dry between coats, there's a clumped up mess because of the fibres. Building it up while it's wet is easy.
You should try out the original waterproof formula once. I think it might work for you! :)

  30. FORGET THE FLARED. Get the Volum Express one, seriously! It's (hopefully) everything you'll want in a mascara. I think the wand is a bit the same on that one but it's amazing! I don't tend to like looking at high end mascaras either but I get them a lot as samples from Sephora!
