Review: Paul and Joe Lipsticks Potpourri and Pret-a-Porter

paul & joe lipstick reviews natural potpourri pret-a-porter
Hi, lovelies! Today I'm continuing my series of Paul & Joe Beaute reviews with a showcase of two of their lipsticks: Pret-a-Porter and Potpourri. They are both really lovely natural colors. I wish I hadn't played it safe and picked up a plum or fuchsia shade. Regardless, the lipsticks are very high quality and I'm happy with my purchase. Pret-a-Porter is light neutral-warm pink. Potpourri is a light nude beige.

Paul & Joe Lipsticks come in three different formulas: Sheer, Natural, and Full Coverage. Pret-a-Porter and Potpourri are both Natural finishes. I'm seriously lusting after some of their Full Coverage lipsticks because they're available in gorgeous shades and I love pigmented lip colors. It can be assumed that the Sheer selection consists of a balm-like lipstick with little color payoff and the Full Coverage lipsticks are completely opaque. Anyways, I found the formula of both Pret-a-Porter and Potpourri to be like a MAC Cremesheen: semi-glossy, light-medium color payoff that's buildable, and a moisturizing feel. This type of finish is perfect for everyday because it's never overwhelming. You can easily apply it without a mirror. However, it obviously wears off quicker than, say, a matte formula so you will need to reapply more often. As I've mentioned before when reviewing MAC Cremesheens, these types of formulas will not dry out your lips or accentuate dryness but they don't hide flaky or chapped lips like opaque lipsticks do. Just something to keep in mind. Also, since these have an element of sheerness to them, they will look a bit different on everyone because your natural lip color will affect the final look. If you want a truer color, you can add a bit of foundation or nude liner to erase your lip color prior to the lipstick application.

Paul & Joe Lipstick bullets are sold separately as refills. The lipstick refills come in a box with a plastic cap cover. They retail for around $17. You must buy a case separately for approx. $5 to house the lipstick in. They're really easy to pop in and out of the case. I actually love this system because there are a bunch of adorable cases to choose from. Of course, this leads to a downside: the cases won't have names so you might have to memorize the name of each lipstick or add a sticker to the bottom. Buying a case for each lipstick refill will add up to a total of $22 per cased lipstick. This means they are in the high-end price range and cost a little less than any Bobbi Brown, NARS or Illamasqua lipstick. You could also buy just one case and switch the lipsticks out.

Phew, that was a long review. I know Paul & Joe isn't very easily available or a hugely talked about brand so I like reviewing their products in detail in order to help anyone who is considering making a purchase. I'm glad to say that so far all of the Paul & Joe products I've tried have nice quality, they aren't just pretty packaging. I love these lipsticks and have been wearing Potpourri tons (used it in my latest video too). I've reviewed two of their products previously: the Peaches & Cream Cheek Color and Pressed Powder in Medium.

If you're in the U.S. you can get Paul & Joe products from Urban Outfitters and Beautyhabit. If you're from the U.K. or any other country you can check Asos, BeautyBay, and the P&J website.

  9. I'm not familiar with the brand so the detailed review is greatly appreciated. Both of these shades look similar and they also look gorgeous on you. Really nice every day lip color. I actually don't really care for the refill system since I can't remember the last time I finished a lipstick tube.
