Review: Illamasqua Hollow Cream Pigment

illamasqua cream pigment hollow review swatches
Hello, lovelies! Hope you had a good weekend. I showed a few Illamasqua Cream Pigments (£17.50) in a haul back in March. I will be reviewing all of them together. However, I wanted to make a separate post for the color Hollow because it's their most popular cream pigment and is most commonly used as a cream contour. There are comparison swatches and face and eye swatches after the cut.

For Contouring: I got Hollow as a multi-purpose pigment, not exclusively for contouring because I knew there was a risk it would be too light for me. The Pixiwoos use Hollow in their videos often. They even used it in their Contouring Master Class (I think that's what that video was called). They only use it on fair and pale skintones and there is a reason for that. Hollow is extremely cool toned and very light. It's basically a taupe. On my medium warm skintone it looks grey and dirty. Below I compared it to a warm bronzer (Bourjois Chocolate Bronzer) and a cooler bronzer (Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer). As you can see, next to those two it looks considerably grey. This is great for fair skin as it mimics an actual shadow. It blends nicely and is quite creamy. However if you're around NC25 or over I'd suggest looking at something else. Not only because it won't look like a shadow since it's lighter, but also because the undertone may come off as muddy. It looks horrible and garish on me in person, the picture below doesn't even do it justice (it looks worse in real life).

As an eyeshadow or base:  I wouldn't wear it on its own because none of the Illamasqua Cream Pigments set the way most cream eyeshadows do. They stay a bit dewy and will crease without a primer. As an eyeshadow base it works fine. Hollow shows creasing on me after just 40 minutes without a primer. Compared to Milani ShadowEyez or Maybelline Color Tattoos which don't crease on me even when worn alone, this isn't impressive at all.

It's important to keep in mind that it didn't work as a contour for me because of my skintone. If you want to see it in action on a lighter skintone check Meg's post. If you're pale and usually find bronzers or contouring powders too orange then this will be amazing for you. The Illamasqua Cream Pigments aren't labeled as anything so you can use them as blushes, lip colors, eyeshadows, etc. I actually bought the color Dab (a lilac) for face painting. So, get creative with them!

  2. Oh wow it looks quite ashy! I'm actually really glad you reviewed this because i too have swatched it a coupel of times at the counter after seeing the Pixiwoo sisters use it in their videos. I'm a NC25 so it probably won't look great on me.

    1. Yeah, I think it'd be best for you to skip if you're an NC25. Specially considering it's not a cheap product xx

  3. Looks lovely in the pan but on the face... you're right, it's because it's cool toned. On the eyes I like it. I use the NYX blush in Taupe for contouring, not too brown, not too grey, ideal for yellow-toned, fair-skined girls on a budget like moi ^^ Thanks for the review Coco and sorry it didn't work for you : / xx

    1. I've always wanted to try Taupe from NYX because quite a few people love it for contouring. I also like Hollow on the eyes and although I'm sad it didn't work for me as a contour, I was kind of expecting it because of the tone. I do have other uses in mind for this though :)

  9. Thanks for the review! Hollow seems to be one of Illamasqua's most raved about products. Having said that, I'm glad you just put it out there that this isn't some miracle in a pan and that it has certain limitations. I think it'd make an interesting lip color haha! OCC is releasing (or has released?) a taupe lip tar so I'm curious to see how they would function in editorials or even in real life.

  12. I've always thought this looked lovely and have been tempted to buy it many times but have always, thankfully, realized that the people who review it and it looks phenomenal on is pale skinned beauties. Such a shame for us olive/tan skinned girls but I suppose we have enough bronzers out there for us already haha ;) I can absolutely see how this looks garish in person and it's evident that it just looks sunken and sallow on you... definitely no good for a natural beaut like you!!

    1. Yeah, there are a bunch of warm and neutral bronzers that are great for warm toned girls so I can't complain :)

  15. This is on my wishlist for sure! I love how it mimics actual shadows on the skin. I'm pretty fair, so I'm hoping it will work ok as a contour :)

  16. It's a shame it doesn't work too well on your skin tone, I'm extremely fair so I've been planning to get it for a contour for a while and hopefully I like it for that. I have Androgen which I quite like as I can use it for blush, lips and eyes x

  20. I keep buying these pigments without really knowing what I'd do with them, turns out nothing as I'm still rubbish at contouring/eyeshadow o.O

  21. I think this would totally work as a contour for me since I'm pale as a ghost! I love the grayish tones in it too, I hate when my powder contour goes too orange. I think it looks really nice on you too, very subtle xx

  25. Was going to buy this but I think I'll skip, I'm not massively warm but I'm not too fair either so maybe I'll stick to bronzer. Really useful review.
