Review: Revlon Plum Velour Lipstick

revlon plum velour lipstick review swatch
We're right in the middle of "berry lipstick season" so I recently picked up (on a whim) the Revlon Plum Velour Super Lustrous Lipstick ($7.99) from the drugstore. This color is part of their "Shine" range which I had never tried before. I believe it's a somewhat recent addition to their line. I have a couple of their Mattes and Cremes so I was curious about what this formula would be like. There are lip and face swatches after the cut.

I'll go over this quickly because I didn't like Plum Velour very much. (Funny how I can rave about a product for 4 paragraphs but want to get through the "bad" ones swiftly.) The pigmentation is sheer. Your natural lip color will affect how it looks on you and you can build the coverage. On the picture above I'm wearing multiple layers to get it as dark as I could. I was hoping it would look dark and vampy like it does on the tube but it doesn't. The formula is shiny, somewhat moisturizing, and comfortable to wear. This reminds me of a Maybelline lipstick I reviewed a while back. I don't like either for the same reason: the formula is nice but the color is not what I expected. I wanted the same dark color on the tube to show up on my lips. Instead I got a medium berry/plum color. I highly dislike how berry shades look on me. Plus when it comes to medium-dark lipsticks, I prefer them not to be sheer because patchiness can show more easily.

Bottom line: If you like berry shades then this is a good one for you. The formula is nice. However I don't like this color on me and was looking for something darker or more vampy.

Let me know what you think of this shade. Do you like berry lipsticks? Have a nice day, lovelies! It's almost Friday, hang in there!

  1. I like how this looks on you but I do love berry lips in general haha I see how this is disappointing though, it looks so vampy on the tube! I'm not the biggest fan of sheer lipsticks, I much prefer picking up a tinted lipbalm if I want something less pigmented.

    1. Agreed. I have unevenly pigmented lips so sheer lipsticks just accentuate that. I prefer something opaque that completely covers my lips x

  5. I noticed that with berry shades you have to look at the tube and always picture it a few shades lighter! I don't know why it happens but I guess because it's so concentrated in the tube that it just gets dark! I really like berry lipsticks and I like how this one looks on you!! Hopefully you find one that you'll like :) Have you tried OCC Dahlia lip tar?

  8. Shame that you don't like this on you Coco; I think it looks lovely on your lips! I also think the formula looks right up my alley as is the color so I may be a bit biased haha :)

  10. Funny, before I even read anything I was like WOW that looks nothing like the tube colour! Too bad, it would have been a lovely colour...I guess this is a good one for gals who are sloooowly trying out the plum shade. I know a lot of people don't want to make the commitment to really bold lips!

    Thanks for your honesty!

    1. Yes, there's a lot that are intimidated by a bold lip so this is a good one to start xx

  12. Beautiful colour, I like that it's more of a sheer finish than a full colour. I'm a bit scared of wearing dark colours

  13. Such a pity this one is too sheer! I can see it clearly.. It'd be much prettier if it were a little more matte and much more opaque.

  14. I've never heard of their Shine range before either. It looks like a great shade for fall/winter weather.

  15. I too wish it looked like it does in the tube because I would run out and get it in a second! What a shame. The formula looks quite nice on your lips, though.

  16. You should try Avon Mega Impact Lipstick in Divine Wine as it's quite a 'dark and vampy' berry shade. I featured it in a FOTD post I did today if you fancy checking it out xx

  17. I thought it was going to be more pigmented as well, what a bummer! I feel like Revlon's 'Cherries in the Snow' lipstick would look amazing on you, it's more of a red tone though xx

  18. Loveeee this! I've always loved Revlon's lipstick selections. It would be awesome if it was more pigmented but it's still a lovely fall shade all in all.

  19. I think you look lovely but I agree that this lipstick isn't amazing on you like others are! I often love the colour of a lipstick but then it just doesn't agree with my skin tone. It's a shame it's not more pigmented and deeper in shade :)

  20. The color is nice, but I would feel the same way. It doesn't look anything like the tube! Womp.

  21. It doesn't look very patchy and still have a nice color pay off. That's the thing that frustrate me about lip products is that the color in the tube can be misleading because you just don't know how it's going to translate on the lips until you try it.

    1. Yes! That's why I like opaque coverage, you know what you're getting, no surprises x

  22. You look so pretty in this shade! This lipstick reminds me of MAC's Lustre finishes; I'm not a huge fan of them since I like my colors opaque rather than sheer, but lots of people love that sheer swipe of color. It looks seriously good on you! If you're interested in splurging on a plum, I've heard many great things about MAC Rebel. x

  23. It's a shame this wasn't what you hoped it would be, I always hate feeling a little disappointed in a product. I really like the look of this shade though, I might try and find it because I'm a little scared of deeper colours and this looks like the perfect introductory shade for me!

  26. revlon lipsticks are the best. I haven't been buying any makeup lately i'm so good. I would love to see a collection storage post from you! I bet you have a ridiculous collection!

    1. Haha, it's not that large. Only fills 2 drawers (a lot for regular person but very mild for a beauty blogger/lover). I do a lot of downsizing often (gifting things I don't use or holding blog sales) x

  28. I also have a warm medium skin tone. Have you tried the Va Va Violet by Revlon? It is a true purple, not sheer. On my complexion, MAC Rebel is a great berry.

  30. It's a shame that the pigmentation is so sheer... That can be a good or a bad thing depending on the person, but I agree with you /:
