A Drugstore Miss: Revlon Black Cherry Lipstick

revlon black cherry lipstick review swatch
Whenever you see a list of affordable fall/vampy lipsticks, 9 out of 10 times (totally made up statistic) it will include the Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Black Cherry. There are many Revlon lipsticks that I adore, Stormy Pink being the most recent one. However I was thoroughly disappointed with Black Cherry and found that it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Worn sheerly, Black Cherry is alright. My problem with it is when I wear it to its full intensity. Obviously I wanted a dark red color like the one in the tube, so I won't be wearing this sheerly ever. The thing is that Black Cherry doesn't build up flatteringly, at least for me. If I posted the close up photo (which I won't because it's bad) you could see the color gather and look darker on my lip lines. Plus, it bleeds easily. It's labeled as a creme finish but I'd describe it as a sheen because it's very shiny and thin. I don't mind that with lighter colors, but when it comes to the vampy lipsticks I think it's best for them to be thicker or more matte so they aren't messy.

In summary, it's just not for me. When it comes to affordable vampy lip colors I prefer Revlon's own Wine Not and I really like Black Cherry from Milani. My favorite at the moment would have to be Rosary from Kat Von D.

What's your favorite dark/vampy lip color?

  1. Thanks for the honest review, I've seen this mentioned countless times but whenever I've swatched it instore it's always felt like it's had too much slip for my liking. Looks pretty as a stain though x

  9. Hey lovely, long time no speak!
I do love vampy winter lip colours, but it's a shame this one wasn't quite up to scratch. The last thing you want with such a rich shade is any bleeding or patchy fading.
    Hope you're well!

  10. A friend of mine has this and I noticed that it seemed to bleed a little after a while which put me off from buying it; reading this I'm glad I didn't! I'll be checking out your other recommendations though!

  20. That would be such a nice colour if it looked as it did in the tube, such a shame! May be worth looking at Sleek's CHERRY lipshade, which looks like this should do but less purple and more red.

  29. I have a vampy-sort of shade that does that, too! For some reason when you apply it opaque it gathers at the strangest spots and sheers out in others. Sorry this was a miss for you ):

  38. I'd usually run from a shade like this but it's just so beautiful, love that it can look so subtle or full on depending on how you layer it!

  39. The colour is pretty and on a few occasions i did contemplate on purchasing this but abandoned it because there are other brands that catches my attention. The colour is nice but it is such a shame that it doesnt give an even finish and gathers in lip lines. Seems like alot of effort is needed to wear this lipstick and to prevent it from bleeding.

Thank you for the review. I hope you have a lovely day!

  45. Oh no, I'm so sorry this isn't to your liking Coco; it's one of my favorites for a vampy lip. One thing though: I ALWAYS put on Revlon's Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in "Crush" underneath it because I find Black Cherry to be a bit too sheer/patchy as well. Having Crush underneath it gives the perfect base and leaves your lips looking full on vamp for hours (no bleeding that way either). :)

    1. I feel like a good lipstick should work well on its own. I guess I'm the kind of person that would rather give it away or return it and find something better than go through more trouble. Unless it was a color that isn't easy duple-able xx

  48. I'm so glad I didn't get this!!! I was contemplating between this one and Milani's Black Cherry (the new colorstatement one) and I ended up getting the latter and I love it! This would work better with a lip liner underneath or for some one who'd like a really creamy sheeny finish I suppose, I must check out Rosary! ^_^

    1. I didn't, but I don't have to go through that much trouble with other vampy shades so to me it isn't worth the effort. Something similar but better in formula is Milani's Black Cherry. xx
