Review: NYX Powder Blush in Red

nyx red blush review swatch
I had always been scared of red blushes. Which reminds me, I remember seeing a meme on the "women logic" of using foundation to remove color only to add it again by using blush (LOL). The thing to keep in mind is that your skin's natural redness is usually patchy and concentrates on the sides of the nose. The purpose of blush is to add life and color in strategic places (along the cheekbones or on the apples of the cheeks) without the splotchiness. Anyway, most blush colors consists of delicate pinks, nudes, and apricots so it's understandable that most are wary of adding bright scarlet to the face.

NYX Red blush is just like every NYX powder blush I've tried: soft and very pigmented. Red is not a pure neutral red but more of a raspberry red (noticeable blue/pink undertone). The first time I used it I tried to get as little as possible on my brush but when I applied it I still went: "woah, too much!" I had to take my huge Real Techniques Powder Brush and buff it out. The effect is a very natural flush a la Snow White that resembles my skin's natural "blushing color." My suggestion to anyone looking to try red blush is to make sure you have removed any other redness from your face using foundation or concealer. Use a very fluffy brush to apply the color. Tapping the blush once is enough for both cheeks.

On my eyes: MAC Teddy Kohl Eyeliner. On my lips: Tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint in Lust. Have you ever tried a red blush?

    1. It has its quirks. It's soooo pigmented and red, you really need to blend it out but the effect is quite nice x

I wonder how this shade compares to the Tarte Amazonian Clay blush in "Natural Beauty"... I've really been wanting to try that one too!!

  8. At first seeing the swatch I was like WOAH, but then I realized it probably is a color that could blend out really nicely! I have a nars cream blush that looks super dark in the pan but when you blend it out it's so pretty!

  18. Love this blush on you!! I've tried a few red blushes, but it still makes my complexion look ruddy, even if I've applied an even layer of foundation & concealer. but it seems to happen with red lips on me too! xx

  20. whoa! despite being frightening in the pan it looks so gorgeous on! but i agree, i have to avoid certain blushers sometimes because it brings out my redness issues, unless i heavily conceal.

  24. It looks super crazy in the pan but it look stunning on your cheeks. It reminds me a little of Illamasqua Tweak, which is one of my favourites, especially at this time of the year <3

  26. I fell in love with red blushes after seeing Exibit A by NARS. I wanted to get the Red NYX blush, but when I ordered online it was out of stock, therefore..I ended up buying the red-toned blush trio by Sleek. I've never made a better purchase in my whole life! I love those blushes!!! :D (there's a review on my blog, if you are curious) I also think that reds tend to look better with very pale skin, if blended and applied lightly! :D
