Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Muse

hourglass opaque rouge liquide lipstick muse review
Hello, lovelies! Happy Saturday. Today's review will be a quick one because this is a product I'm not all that pleased with. The Hourglass Opaque Rouge Lipsticks are incredibly hyped, specially the colors Icon and Riviera. I saw swatches of Muse over a year ago and have had it on my wish list since. It took a while for me to "bite the bullet" and purchase because the Opaque Rouges have a mixed bag of reviews. Plus, at $28 for 0.10 oz, it's one of the more expensive liquid lipsticks on the market.

Muse is fittingly described as a coral red (although I'd consider it a reddish coral, with more orange than red). In a nutshell, it's one of the most beautiful lip colors ever. However, the Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick formula is one of the finickiest I've encountered. Other liquid lipsticks I own (like the Stila All Day Liquid Lipstick, Guerlain Rouge G L'Extrait, and NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream) apply and layer flawlessly. The Opaque Rouge has a tendency to crack, gather, and go patchy. You can get a nice application out of it, but it requires more effort than the no-nonsense brands mentioned previously. With the Opaque Rouge I have to be more careful about using really really thin layers and have to wait more for them to set. It comes down to, why pay more when you can get better for less? I feel like my purchase is justified because Muse is such a gorgeous color that I have wanted for ages, but it will be my last Hourglass Opaque Rouge purchase.

Seriously, if you're in the market for liquid lipsticks look to the Stila All Days and the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams. And, yes, the Guerlain Rouge G L'Extrait cost $50 each, but you get twice the product (0.20 oz). What have been your experiences with liquid lipsticks? Have you tried the Opaque Rouges from Hourglass?

  4. There's no denying that it is a GORGEOUS colour, but to me it looks a bit...chalky? What a bummer that it didn't measure up to your standards. I know this product isn't the highest end of products, but I would have a hard time purchasing a $28 lip gloss/lip stick.

I've heard really good things about the Shesido Laquer Rouge and that one is $30 CND. Have you tried it? There are definitely some beautiful shades!

  6. I really wanted to try Icon, I almost bought it the other day. The colors they have are gorgeous, but I don't want to spend that kind of money for the quality. Thanks for the review :)

  9. Well that's disappointing! At that price point I would expect a flawless formula. I like the liquid lipsticks/lip creams I've tried but I have to say I'm not too fussy about my lip products lol

  10. Its a pity you had such a bad experience with this lipstick because the color is beautiful!

  12. Yeah, like someone else said, it does look chalky and patchy. The colour is gorgeous, but it seems to me that this particular formula just isn't quite there yet.

  13. Muse looks awesome! I haven't tried any liquid lipsticks yet but I have a mini version of Stila's liquid lippie in Beso that I need to crack open. Something tells me though, that I may prefer traditional "cream" lipsticks.

  14. Hourglass colors are all so pretty and pigmented, but I had the same problem! It gets dry so quickly and just looks bad even when I reapply. I was very disappointed when I first got mine.

  15. Too bad about this... I swatched Riviera and I just didn't like the color (though I do love other orange-toned lipsticks like YSL's Le Orange). I love the Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge stains; the color was very even and you get amazing pigment from just one layer :)

  17. The color looks absolutely gorgeous and is SO stunningly unique but… well… I can't say it looks the greatest (formula-wise) on your lips :( Such a shame!! At that price and from a brand like hourglass I would expect so much better.

    1. Haha I get those comments a lot but I've never stained that rug with lipstick because they're never in direct contact. Plus, it's my blog pictures rug so I wouldn't mind if it got dirty xx

  21. Shame about the formula, but the color looks great on you Coco. I adore the Sephora cream lip stains if you ever are in the market for another...they are great quality and inexpensive too. x

  22. This formula sounds like a bitch. I'll stick to the soft matte lip creams, they are my favourite liquid lipsticks!

  23. The colour is so stunning and looks amazing on you! It's such a shame the formula isn't the nicest, but you picked a beautiful shade to go with that will be worth the extra effort with applying because it's so unique <3

  24. I have heard the formula on these is quite hard to work with and drying. The colours are undoubtedly beautiful though!

  25. What a great shade! Sorry the formula was lacking- I have the Opaque Rouge in Icon and really like it- maybe Muse is a bit different. I do want to try the NYX ones too! xo

  27. I've heard so much about these and Muse is absolutely a STUNNER! It's a shame about the formula, although your review makes me feel better about not owning one! I'll definitely need to give the NYX Soft Matte Lip creams a try - especially now that they're more easily accessible in Australia!

  29. I have the same shade and thought wow, the color is brighter than I thought! So I end up not wearing it as much, but I do prefer this liquid lipstick over Giorgio Armani's lip maestro. Now that, is something that I find too drying, cracking, and just not worth the price. As you mentioned, I also love the NYX lip creams :)

  30. I have to agree with you!
I bought Icon after wanting it for a really long time, and it really is not my favorite... it is harder to apply and kind of streaky... :(
