Last Minute Gift Idea: Candle Shadow Light

diy ambient shadow light candle holder gift
The holidays are upon us and that equals gift giving. Sometimes we have to get several gifts for different people and that can get pretty expensive. Here is a beautiful (and affordable) gift idea that is great for anyone who loves candles or home decor. I hoard love candles and would be happy to receive one as a gift, but I know some people aren't comfortable with just gifting a single candle. So a candle + holder duo makes a great little gift. Shops that carry candles (like Bed Bath & Beyond, Yankee Candle, Bath & Body Works, etc.) sell candle holders that usually retail for over $20. However, you can go to discount stores or outlets like TJ Maxx or Marshall's and find decorative bowls for just $3!

I found this bowl at my local TJ Maxx for $3.99. Any decorative bowl or vase will work perfectly as a candle holder. They're not specifically designed to hold candles so they're usually cheaper than actual candle holders. I then popped in a 3 wick candle from Bath & Body Works inside. B&BW 3 wicks are around 4 inches in diameter so keep that in mind when picking out a bowl. Also, try to look for partially opaque or semi-frosted bowls because they cast a beautiful shadow in dark rooms. It's like your own little DIY ambient shadow lamp. This one in particular gives my room a really romantic feel.

You could also buy a $1 glass bowl from the dollar store and spray paint it yourself to get a similar effect. P.S. The Bath & Body Works Semi-Annual Sale is coming up this Saturday, December 26th. That's a great time to stock up on candles for 2014.

What gifts have you bought this holiday season? Have you put together any presents like this one?
