Review: MAC Ruby Woo Lipstick

mac ruby woo lipstick review swatch nc30
Classic, hyped, cult favorite. Those are a few words that can describe MAC's Ruby Woo Lipstick ($15). For ages I convinced myself that I didn't need it. In part thanks to Ruby Woo's bad reputation for being on of the driest lipsticks in the market. After seeing how gorgeous it looked on other people (no matter their hair color or skin tone), I caved. Here are my thoughts on this MAC classic.

Shade
Although I own a handful of cool-toned reds (not that many though) Ruby Woo is different in color than the rest. That's great news because I dislike having repeats. Ruby Woo is a cool-toned red. I'd like to point out that most cool-toned reds can be classified as either blue based or pink based. Ruby Woo is a blue based red and I even compared it to NARS Dragon Girl (pink based) on the swatch above.
Pigmentation
Nothing new here. Ruby Woo is really pigmented, as are most MAC lipsticks. The only sheer or semi-opaque lipsticks I've encountered from MAC are the Cremesheens (and some Frosts) and that's because they're meant to be that way.
Longevity
Again, no surprise here. Ruby Woo is a retro matte which means it grabs on to the lips better than a creme or glossy product. Plus, it's a red and reds always leave a stain behind on the lips. This means it wears for a very very long time.
Texture
It's definitely among the driest traditional lipsticks I've ever dealt with (traditional as in it comes in a tube, i.e. not a liquid lipstick). However, given its bad reputation I actually expected it to be worse. It doesn't glide on the lips, you have to apply pressure/it tugs slightly but it's not the driest lipstick I've used. That title goes to Illamasqua's Obey. Unlike Obey, Ruby Woo doesn't look powdery just really matte.

Summary: It's not the most comfortable, but given its bad reputation I was expecting a lip destroyer. This did not dry out my lips. Although, I would highly recommend that people who do have dry/chapped lips to begin with skip this and opt for creamier mattes. If you still want the retro matte look, then I recommend you check out the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils which are not nearly as dry as Ruby Woo.

Let me know if you've tried Ruby Woo as well. What are your thoughts on it?

It does dry my lips pretty bad but it looks so good on that I don't care.

  6. I was put off from buying Ruby Woo as well because of the reputation! I went for Russian Red which I actually adore so I can't really complain but your review has me thinking maybe I should give Ruby Woo a try.

  12. Ruby is one of my all-time favourite lipsticks, but I find it too drying to wear on a regular basis. Such a shame really as the colour is so stunning.

  16. This is probably my favorite red in my collection! I love matte formulas for their longevity especially. I really like this because I've been able to wear it with out using a liner and have had no problem with feathering or fading.

  22. I love Ruby Woo, it's become my go-to red, I just usually prep with balm underneath. My favorite thing about it is that you can google it and see girls of all different races and skintones looking super amazing in it. It's truly one size fits all!

  27. It's such a raved shade- it's the perfect red! It looks gorgeous on you, and I can imagine it suiting most skin tones :) Such a shame that it has a really drying and matte formula that is difficult to work with- I have the driest lips so I think I will avoid the mattes :(

  28. I always thought this wasn't for me but now I'm tempted, it looks so good on you. I actually like dry formulas because they last so much longer!

  31. My two sisters own it and for a few days I thought I should get it but my lips have a very weird shape and this lipstick is just impossible to apply for me... but gosh it looks BEAUTIFUL!
Since I was looking for a perfect red and Ruby woo is so hard to apply for me I got MAC Red instead and I'm loving it as it is creamier ... but what i'd love to get is Stila Beso :) x

  34. I was going to buy this a while ago but opted for Russian Red. I think Ruby Woo is a little lighter? but the trade off is Russian Red is SO comfortable to wear, whereas Ruby Woo definitely dries my lips out way more than any other lipstick.

It looks stunning on you :))

  43. I'm afraid to purchase this colour because it might turn out too bright for me, and a bit daring. But looking at the swatches, it looks mighty fine. It's really matte and not powdery-looking as you have stated so might as well give it a try.

  45. The colour of this is gorgeous! It's a shame it's quite drying, I don't think it would work too well for me.
