Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Pencils: Perversion vs. Zero

urban decay 24/7 glide on pencils zero vs perversion review
Hello, lovelies! Today I want to recommend to you my favorite pencil eyeliners, the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils ($19). I own these in three colors: Perversion, Zero, and Crash. The Glide-On eye pencils are very popular makeup items and have somewhat of a cult status in the beauty world. I do know of people who dislike them because we all have our favorite eyeliners and not everyone uses them in the same way. I'll also be doing a comparison between Urban Decay's two black shades Perversion and Zero

First, let's talk about why I love the 24/7 Glide-On formula so much. For me, they are the perfect eye pencil. 1) They are nicely pigmented (what you see on the outer packaging is what you get on the eye). There's no need to run them across your waterline over and over. 2) They're creamy. No unnecessary tugging on the delicate eye area. You know there are some crap eyeliners out there that make you feel like you're going to tear your eye off. Not these. 3) They take a few seconds to set. This can be a good or bad thing. For me, it's a plus. It gives me time to smudge them along the bottom or top lash lines if I want to. If you have very watery eyes or an oily eye area, this can mean smudging on the waterline before they have fully set. 4) They last long and don't smudge on my waterline. Some liners need to be set with eyeshadow or else they'll transfer and I'll look like a raccoon. Not the 24/7 Glide-Ons. I only go over them with eyeshadow when I'm doing a smokey look (because to me it looks better, not because they need it). Also, the 24/7 Glide-Ons come in over 30 colors (yes, really) so you're bound to find what you're looking for.

So of, course, here's the big question. These cost $19, why shouldn't I just get a $9 black eyeliner at the drugstore seeing as there are tons? In my experience, the drugstore eyeliners I've tried are either creamy but smudge or long-wearing but dry. And when I do find one that has all the qualities I look for, it's usually not very long wearing. My waterline eats it up for some weird reason. I have to take them with me for frequent touch ups (specially for nighttime events like da clubs and da bar) which means more sharpening and using them up quicker. I've had that one 24/7 Glide-One in Zero for years. Before that, I used to go through at least 2 drugstore eyeliners a year. In the long run, the cheaper liners ended up costing more because I had to repurchase more often.

Now that that pointless rant is out of the way, what's the difference between Zero and Perversion? Nothing much, really. Perversion is a visibly darker black, one of the blackest liners in the market. Because it's more saturated, it's also a tad softer which might mean more smudging for some. I haven't had a problem with it though.

I hope this was helpful to some of you. It amazes me how much I can go on and on about an eyeliner (for God's sake!) Let me know if you've tried the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Pencils. Do you love them as much as me or did they not work out so well for you? What's your favorite eyeliner pencil?

  1. I like the look of Perversion much more than Zero. I owned one other eyeliner before that was Rockstar (and okay, the Zero/Whiskey duo) and I sold both of those. I've been looking into trying other shades, but I don't know...

Like you said, $19 for a pencil is still a lot! I would definitely pick some up on sale though.

  2. I LOVE these eyeliners!

A good drugstore alternative are the Barry M waterproof eyeliners, they're only £3? (i dont know what that is, like $5?) Do you have Barry M in America?
    I think you'd love them.

    Great blog btw!

  3. I have a ton of these eyeliners in smaller sizes from gift sets and I really like them. I'm usually not an eyeliner person, but when I do want to wear some, I typically reach for an Urban Decay one!

  4. Urban Decay do the best liners. They are perfect! I have Zero, but it's on its last legs, so I will invest in Perversion next :) x

  5. This urban decay eyeliner in Zero had been my holy grail eyeliner for quite a while, but i find that the Rimmel scandaleyes works just as well and at a fraction of the price. Thank you for the review though~ i thought that the shade 'Zero' was the darkest black, but i guess i was wong!

    Have a lovely day! <3

  9. Thank you so much for doing this comparison! I haven't tried any of these yet but I'm definitely going to invest in them as I need a good black liner! After seeing your comparison I think I'll go with zero!

  11. My skin is weird, it's very dry but Urban Decay pencils always do that smudgy raccoon thing on me unless I set it with powder. Maybe because I tend to put a lot of eye cream on, otherwise my concealer will almost always cake up. Even so, they're one of my favorites! Definitely worth the price tag to me. Currently I just have Zero, but I've heard from a lot of other beauty bloggers/gurus/etc that they prefer Perversion out of the two. Thanks for the comparison :)!

    1. It might be the eye cream. I don't use eye cream when I wear makeup because I only use it at nighttime before bed. Been missing you in the blogging world, Becky! :)

  13. I haven't bought any of these pencils but I have tried them before and I love them. I have a list of quite a few that I want to be and at first I had Zero as the black but I actually like the look of Perversion better.
    Thanks for this comparison!

  15. I've always been curious to see these two pencils compared so thank you Coco!! Perversion looks much richer (crazy to think that it can make another UD pencil look cheap but… well… it really does make Zero look a touch less quality) because of the opacity; I kind of love that though since they are two different blacks with two very different purposes. I love these pencils and I love the stila smudge sticks just as much!! :)

    1. I know, right?! Zero is a GREAT black so for it to look puny compared to something else… that's a true testament to how intense Perversion is.

  16. Definitely agree. I love these pencils for all the reasons you said, especially because they come in so many different, beautiful colors. I like Perversion more than Zero just because it's so much darker, but I haven't had a problem with it smudging or moving around more either.

  17. i love these too, my favorite eye pencils!! i actually prefer zero over perversion because when i swatched them both at sephora the perversion swatch seemed really hard to get off - which is good in terms of makeup longevity but i was getting a bit freaked whether i'd need to tug on my eyes real hard at the end of the day to get it off. zero is black enough for me and like you mentioned, really stays put :)

  21. Perversion is great! I got the double ended one with the brown on the other end with the Sephora Draw the Line set. I love using this to tightline because it's so black, and I don't have to force it to transfer colour.

I also love the MUFE Aqua Eyes pencil, but it's almost too good! If I use it to tightline on my upper lid then I wake up with it smudged all around my eyes for days afterwards, no matter how well I try to remove it!

  23. I never thought I needed Perversion as I had Zero, but it came with my Smoked palette and eventually I gave it a go. It's true what they say, once you go black, you never go back. I hardly use zero anymore, as perversion is such a rich, creamy black.
As for the pricetag - SO worth shelling out for.

  24. Great post, I have both of these and I'm now obsessed with Urban Decay liners! Zero definitely doesn't show up as dark but they're both lovely!

  25. Believe it or not...despite how long these have been out I've never bought a single UD eyeliner for myself yet! I totally need perversion in my life, I was handed down zero from a friend and it was amazing when I did use it before throwing it out but the staying power was amazing. I totally need something to line my upper lash line with! Thanks for reviewing!

  32. I love Urban Decay's Glide-On liners so much that I almost considered buying the vault, haha! Although I do love them my favorites are the MUFE Aqua Eyes eye liners, as far as pencil liners go. They're that nice mix of creamy, yet not smudgy and they last for EVER on the eyes. I think I'm going to get Perversion though, because how can you not own one of the blackest eye liners on the market? C'mon! Haha :D

  33. I have both of these UD pencils and they are exactly the same sizes are yours! How funny, hahaha :p I like Zero better, but I wish it was as dark as Perversion. Perversion smudges really badly on me.

  34. over the years i've pretty much bought the majority of colors.. they are definitely my favorites as well. at first i didn't like perversion because it would smudge too easily but after working with it, i can manage it! i definitely give it more time to set and i put translucent powder along where i apply it. perversion is a great dupe [for me] for bobbi brown's long wearing eyeliner in jet.

  35. Could you please tell me does it wash off easily?
I have Maybelline New York Eyestudio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner 24h, but it's always so difficult to wash it off :( Unfortunately in my country you can't buy Urban Decay at the shop, so I usually collect reviews before I buy something online. Thanks!

    1. I have bad news for you , I'm sorry :( This is SO hard to remove. It's both a blessing and a curse. You don't have to worry about re-applying ever, but I typically need to cleanse and use makeup remover three times to get most of this off. And even then, I still have a some faint remnants of eyeliner the next day.
