The Spring Nail: Glossy + Matte

matte nail polish top coats loreal revlon spring
Last month I was able to spot some matte nail polish top coats while perusing the isles at the drugstore. At one point I thought these were only available from salon brands like OPI, Essie, and Orly but I was very happy to see that both Revlon and L'Oreal have their own versions (although L'Oreal's is limited edition and I haven't seen it again since). Read on to see how I've been incorporating mattes and spring pastels.

The first pairing consists of an off-white color from Bettina called Marshmallow. On the left is what the nail polish looks like regularly with no top coat. On the right is how it looks like topped with the L'Oreal Colour Riche The Magic Top Coats in Matte Velvet ($7). For the second pairing I chose a pale bubblegum pink, also from Bettina, which is called Cotton Candy. Again, the left picture shows its regular finish and the right side shows how it looks with the Revlon Matte Top Coat ($5).

Matte nails may not be for everyone, but I really love them. They also look amazing with darker nail polish colors like black and burgundy. The downside is that matte top coats make nail polish chip a bit faster (specially Revlon's) and the porous surface is more prone to dirt and scratches.

Have you ever rocked a matte nail?

  1. I love bright matte nails for spring and summer! I think the matte is more noticeable on colors that lean neon and are very noticeable. I tried an NYC Matte top coat over dark dove purple nails and it didn't look as nice as it did over bright hot pink nails.

    1. I love them on all types of shades. I find that on darker shades it gives like a "leather" effect which I think is very cool. x

  4. I have yet to try a matte nail (crazy for a nail polish addict like me, huh?) but have definitely wanted to… I've just never been able to decide on a brand to buy a matte top coat from! Glad you're enjoying the matte look though Coco :)

  6. I've always thought mixing matte and glossy looks really cool--like matte but with a glossy french tip. It's subtle but super interesting!

  14. I've never used matte nailpolishes just because I haven't really seen a top coat that makes any nail polish matte. I've only seen (until now) certain colors with matte finish and I could never decide on any. But this post is like a 'realization' that I can use a matte finish on any nail polish and I really want to try it now, because it looks great with the colors you've got! They actually look stunning on their own too :)

  16. I love the baby pink shade! Matte top coats are a must have for me. Since I got one I haven't bought a matte nail polish because every color can now be a matte shade.
