NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bolero

nars velvet matte lip pencil bolero review
Hello, lovelies! I don't now if anyone remembers (depends on how closely you read my posts, haha) but two months ago I mentioned that I was exclusively wearing balm-y lip products because a certain lipstick destroyed my lips. Well, this was it. Keep in mind that everyone has different experiences with products, but I have several conflicting feelings about Bolero.

I bought Bolero after seeing it worn many times by Lily Melrose. I don't think she uses it much anymore, but at one point it was like her signature color. She's one of the first bloggers I ever started reading regularly so I this lipstick has been tempting me for years. She mentioned it was dry so I was expecting it to be. Plus, really pale matte lip colors like this tend to look powdery. It's the nature of the color/formula combination. That's not my problem with it though. It's actually very soft and applies easily on the lips without any tugging even though the finish is very matte (something that is typical to NARS Velvet Mattes). It wears for a long time and has great pigmentation. I think it's a much (much) better version of Illamasqua's Obey Lipstick. It doesn't feel tight on my lips. However, after wearing this lipstick my lips feel dry and chapped. That's something that doesn't happen often. There may be other factors coming into play (like dehydration or weather) but I have to assume it's Bolero because after I wear it my lips feel like a desert.

So, in summary: Bolero is a very pale, milky pink. The color isn't for everyone's skintone or taste. Right now I'm somewhere around my tannest and I feel this is a hair too light so I haven't been wearing it often. When it's on the lips, it feels great. The problem is after it has worn off on me. It leaves my lips feeling dry. There are ways around this (like using a lot of lip balm before and after or pairing this with a lip gloss) but I'm a firm believer that products should work well on their own. Still, if you have your heart set on a mod/Bardot baby pink I would recommend Bolero over Illamasqua's Obey any day.

  4. I actually think this looks stunning on you! The colour itself is so pretty but sadly I don't think I could pull it off. Besides I'm not the hugest fan of particularly drying lip products.

  6. No. No. No. This doesn't even look right. Dry formulas, like this, look the same way on me.

  12. From afar it really does look amazing on your tan skintone but I do see how it's powdery and a bit uneven up close! I probably would never try this shade, I stay steer of very pale creamy shades!

  17. Not the sort of colour that looks good on me even though it's retty. Shame it doesn't work and left your lips in a state. I have two velvet matte pencils and they've been good!

  18. I bought Bolero when it first came out a couple summers back, attracted to the 1960s feel of it. But I agree- it did leave my lips feeling pretty dry and it was a tougher shade to wear. I ended up swapping it away. The shade looks lovely on you, though!
