Review: e.l.f. Matte Lip Color in Natural

elf matte lip color natural swatch review nc30
I've had this lip product for a while and it only occurred to me that it reminds me of the Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balms (sans the minty feel) now that I'm writing this review. I'm talking about the e.l.f. Studio Matte Lip Color in Natural ($3). I'm not too proficient with e.l.f. products but I've had good experiences with the ones I've tried so far. By the way, you can find e.l.f. product at Target, Kmart or their U.S. Website. They also have an official Australian and U.K. website.

I found the e.l.f. Natural Matte Lip Pencil to be really creamy. Almost balm-y feeling but without the actual benefits of a balm. It's nicely pigmented, although this color is fairly pale so it can accentuate dryness a bit. The staying power is average, about 3-4 hours. Not as good as typical matte lipsticks but, like I said, it's creamier and thinner than a lot of drugstore mattes (especially Revlon's which I find too dry). I also really like that the pencil is quite slim because it provides a more precise application. It's very comfortable to wear and I really like it overall. At $3, it's a total steal and even better for $1.50 if you wait for half off promo codes on e.l.f.'s website. My two biggest critiques have to do with packaging. e.l.f. makeup is cheap, so the packaging is naturally not the best quality. However, I have a particular pet peeve with this product and that is that the color stick rattles when you move it. It seems that the lip pencil does not fit snugly in the plastic. My second issue is that the color on the bottom of the packaging, the one on the cardboard box it comes in, and the actual color of the product are all different. I don't know if that's an issue with this particular shade or all of them, but it poses a problem because when you take it home and open it you get something different than what you were expecting.

Bottom Line: Do I recommend this product? Yes!

Have you tried this? What are your favorite e.l.f. products? P.S. To see a full-face picture of me wearing this lip color, see this makeup look.

  1. Now that elf is more readily available here in Aus, I really need to check out more of their stuff! This lip pencil seems pretty good! Especially for the price. I'll have to see if I like any of the colours they have here!

  2. I do enjoy using ELF products because some of their stuff are really good quality for the price! However, just like you, i am a bit put off by their unsophisticated and cheap packaging which comes with the low cost item. This Matte lip colour looks really pretty and definitely a colour that i would personally wear, although i'm not liking the fact that they accentuates dry patches as i always have chapped lips!

Thank you for the review, i hope you have a lovely day! <3

  4. It's a lovely color! I never tried anything from e.l.f but this one looks good apart from the miss leading color on the packaging.

  6. Good to know that these are worth it - I'm really drawn to the pinky-brown Praline shade, but I wasn't sure if it would be worth picking up or not!

  16. In your photo I noticed the color on the packaging and the stick itself were different. I find that annoying, too. I like that it's creamy, though. I find many matte formulas to be dry.

  19. I love these! I have both this shade and the red one. :-) I do hate how the bullet just rattles inside the packaging though, it's quite annoying. I'm hoping that they'll fix it and maybe add more shades.
