I picked one of the Rimmel ScandalEyes Eye Shadow Paints in Pomegranate after seeing several U.K. beauty bloggers rave about them. I swatched a few colors first and noticed a discrepancy in the formula right away. Most were nicely pigmented but a few, mainly the purple color, were somewhat sheer and patchy. My experience with this product has not been a positive one, regardless of how many times I have tried to make it work for me.
I guess the pictures speak for themselves. This product dries really really quickly. Don't even dare apply it on both eyes and then blend. The eye you're not working on will have dried solid by the time you're done with the first. Even the "blended" swatch looks patchy (for my standards). Here are my problems with this product:
- It dries way too quickly. Granted, this thing does not budge once it has dried, which can be a plus for really oily lids, but it just makes application too high maintenance for me. It also dries a bit "tight" so it's not ideal for dry lids or mature skin.
- I think a squeeze tube might have been a better packaging idea for this because the formula is very opaque and the doe foot applicator deposits too much product. Alternatively, they could improve the rubber stopper inside the tube so that it takes off more product from the wand before you pull it out. (It's something I could have gotten used to, though, had I found the formula worthwhile).
- I don't like how it blends with fingers. I actually got a better result with a synthetic brush because it was able to drag the product around better. This is a result of the ultra quick-drying formula. I could leave it partially blended so that I don't have to tug on my eyes, but that leads me to the next issue....
- I feel like I can't wear this alone because the edges don't look as nicely blended as I would like. I would have to only use this as an eyeshadow base and always cover it up with powder eyeshadow.
In summary: dries too quickly, edges look patchy, not good for layering, can lead to tugging on the delicate eye area in order to get it to look nicely blended.
I tried to like this, I really did, but I just couldn't. It doesn't suck. It has redeeming qualities like amazing staying power and crease resistance, but.... there is no way I would realistically recommend this or even reach for it when I own products with more pleasant formulas.
I'd recommend the Milani ShadowEyez or Jordana 12 Hour Eyeshadow Sticks over these any day. The aforementioned are creams, so if you really want a "liquid" eyeshadow formula I'd say pick up the Cover Girl Bombshell ShineShadows (which blend nicely but aren't as long lasting) or the Ellis Faas Creamy Eyes (which are amazing!) instead.
Let me know if you've tried these and how you like them. Do you have Pomegranate? I wonder if it's a dud color. I could even do a video about the application of this product, that's how disappointed I am. I might do a hits and misses. One of my 2014 blog resolutions was to film more but so far... LOL, it's not going so well.
