NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Train Bleu

nars velvet matte lip pencil train bleu nc30 review swatch
I've been putting off this review for a couple of months because I always like to give products that don't impress me a fair chance. I like to test them several times under different conditions and with a different application. And as much as I adore the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils, the color Train Bleu ($25) and I are not meant to be.

The formula is consistent with the rest of my NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils: pigmented, retro matte, creamy, easy to apply, doesn't tug, and long wearing. However, there is something about Train Bleu that is a bit off. It catches on all of my lip imperfections (big or small) and accentuates them. Even if I apply it right after exfoliating and moisturizing my lips, I can't get it to look even. My other Velvet Mattes apply without any trace of patchiness so there is no excuse. You can't see it from afar, but I can't wholeheartedly recommend Train Bleu.

You can see a full-face picture of myself wearing Train Bleu in this outfit post.

Do you own this? Tell me what you think. What's your favorite vampy lip color?

  1. I was waiting for this review. I loved how it looked on you in that outfit post and it's been on my wishlist ever since. The color is so pretty that I'm willing to overlook that it accentuates lip imprefections xx

  2. That's beautiful!! Kind of reminds me of MAC Diva. Shame about it clinging to dry patches, though!

  5. That colour is intense! It's a really shame that it accentuates dry patches and looks uneven, but I guess a colour that dark would be hard to formulate in a matte finish!

  6. Ah, that so disappointing! The colour's so vampy but the coverage is just so patchy! Shame!

  12. That's too bad this doesn't compare to the other velvet mattes! I have red square and love the formula. I've always loved the color of this but if it gives a patchier finish I'd definitely rather save the money. Thanks for the review!

  13. i used to have this... wore it once and back to sephora it went. the color is so gorgeous but the formula is so bad and it wore off so unflatteringly! luckily my wet n wild megalast in vamp it up is a good enough substitute for now.

  14. I do know what you mean, I own the very same colour plus one other bars lip pencil (sadly not more as the price for a pencil that needs sharpening it high). I keep telling myself I don't wear it often because it's not been the season for a while - but truth be told it does show too many imperfections. It feels quite high maintenance too, I can't relax and rely on it too look good when I wear it. This review gives me confidence that the others ARE worth persisting with though, and that I just committed to a slightly dud colour/finish option. I think my other one is called YU a bright bold fuchsia, and it's incredible! I love some of their coral options too.

  20. It's a shame when the formula is off and it doesnt work as well as you expected. This is why I am a bit wary of lip pencils!

  25. I got this one a while back and ended up returning it... I actually think it's the only item that I've returned to Sephora. You're right from afar it looks amazing and I hope to find the same effect in a better lipstick!

  26. Two years ago I bought this as well as the Nars Pure Matte Lipstick in the shade Volga. Volga is slightly lighter than Train Bleu and it is a bit more burgundy/oxblood than Train Bleu which I think has more cooler purple tones to it. Train Bleu was way too matte and not forgiving at all on my lips. I also found that I couldn't really touch up with it throughout the day because it was such a dry texture. Something else that bothered my was how much product I would waste sharpening it! In the end, I returned it and kept Volga which is one of my all time favorite lip colors! It is definitely very matte but goes on quite creamy (assuming you've used a lip balm prior). It lasts a long time and looks absolutely stunning on the lips. I think it would really suite your skin tone actually! Volga also has a thicker texture so it does a good job of hiding imperfections. Its still matte and therefore difficult to wear at times but it is so beautiful and much better than Train Bleu in my opinion :)
