NYX Macaron Lippie in Earl Grey

Remember when the NYX Macaron Lippies ($5) came out? The hype surrounding these was insane. There were many colors that caught my eye but until I knew firsthand what the formula was like, I opted for only getting my favorite one. The shade I found most unique was Earl Grey, a muted cornflower blue. I haven't found many occasions where I've considered this lip color to be an appropriate one, specially since the formula isn't quite as good as I'd like it to be. Regardless, once I wore it out the color wasn't as intimidating as I thought it would be.

Here's my issue with Earl Grey... I love the color and the pigmentation is great. The formula however is a bit too oily/slippery. It looks and feels good on the lips, but I don't feel 100% comfortable wearing it because it travels and transfers easily. Plus the edges around the lip line tend to look feathered. It feels like the NYX Round Lipsticks which I know many people find thin and oily. Although that type of texture is not my favorite, I usually don't mind the fact. However, it's definitely an undesirable quality with a bold color like this. I can't wear this out without having the worry on the back of my mind that this will transfer. To remedy the fact, you could put some translucent setting powder on top or apply a transparent lip liner underneath.

I would recommend Earl Grey (and the Macaron Lippies) for most people because they're novelty colors, something you will almost never wear, so there's no reason to spend a lot on a pastel lipsticks. As for myself, I'm looking into brands like Lime Crime or Melt Cosmetics because I want to wear colors like this more often and wish to find a longer lasting matte formula.

  4. Earl Grey looks great on you, but I do understand your concern. I agree Lime Crime does matte formula for unusual/alt shades and you should definitely try! :) x

  5. These are beautiful and you pull off this shade really well, but I have heard of other people saying this formula is too oily, too. Total shame!

    1. Yep, I feel like once the novelty wears off most people won't be wearing them because the formula isn't practical. x

  6. This shade is so much fun (I'm dying to try the Macaron lippies!), but such a shame the formula is a bit off. Looks great on you nonetheless! xo

  8. This is such a gorgeous blue, I feel like it would make amazing bedding! And you actually pull it off really well! The formula sounds like it needs perfecting though.

  9. Girl, that colour looks so good on you, especially paired with the royal blue you're wearing. I think the greyish tones in the lipstick help make it more wearable. It's a shame the formula isn't the best, but there are lots of indie brands that do great unconventional colours. I've been thinking of trying Limnit lipsticks - have you heard of them?

  14. I love that blue on you! I find a lot of NYX's offbeat colored lipsticks have that slippery feel - I haven't tried the Macaron lipsticks, but I've tried 3 of the Wicked lipsticks and they all are very slippery/'oily' to apply.

    1. I got really excited for the Wickeds but then I read reviews saying they were just as slippery as the Macarons :(
