Coastal Scents Hot Pot Eyeshadow Singles Collection: Swatches and Reviews

coastal scents eyeshadows collection review swatch amaretto copper pot chai spice melon raisin berry fresh chive rustic maroon earth rose thunderous spring fling oktoberfest oatmeal tan lavender amethyst gold silver black green
I'm glad to finally be able to publish this post. I've been mentioning a Coastal Scents eyeshadow collection/roundup review almost every single time I've posted a makeup look featuring their eyeshadows. There were a few technical difficulties when it came to this post. After I photographed the swatches, I realized I left out some shades so I had to do them all over again (it's hard to keep track of all 35 eyeshadows specially since they are sorted in my palettes by color, not brand.) Then one day my cat got into my makeup palettes (my mistake for leaving them out in the open) and ruined two of the eyeshadows.

In summary: Although there are 35 swatches, I only own the 33 shades shown above because two were lost and unsalvageable (Steel Grey and Amaretto). I also apologize for the fact that the swatches are not in order. Some of the photos were taken weeks apart.

GREYS/SILVERS (Row 1)
01. Elven Silver: Very light frosty taupe.
02. Aluminium Taupe (ME02): More silver and frostier than Elven Silver.
03. Thunderous: Medium dark grey with a satin finish.
04. Black Berry (M06): Brown-toned matte black. Not the blackest eyeshadow I own, but layering makes it work.
05. Steel Grey (ME18): Not pictured above but swatched below (it was one of the casualties). Cool-toned grey with a satin finish.

PURPLES/VIOLETS (Rows 2 and 3)
06. Light Blue (S02): Frosty white blue. Really good pigmentation for such a pale shade.
07. Icelandic: Pale cornflower blue with a satin finish.
08. Ice Ballet: Light pastel lavender with a shimmery finish.
09. Lavender (S08): Darker and more blue-toned than Ice Ballet.
10. Amethyst (S16): Stunning metallic purple.
11. Deep Eggplant (S40): Deep indigo. It has shimmer but it completely disappears on application so it's essentially matte.
12. Panama Rose: Beautiful metallic mauve/rose color.
13. Vintage Burgundy: Deep maroon with a satin finish.

PINKS/REDS (Row 4)
14. Raisin Berry (ME15): More purple and more shimmery than Vintage Burgundy.
15. Melon (S32): Salmon pink with a matte finish.
16. Rustic Maroon: Frosty hot pink.
17. Pomegranate Red: Raspberry (pink undertones) red with a matte finish.

ORANGE/YELLOWS (Row 5)
18. Georgia Peach: Metallic yellow-orange.
19. Phoenix Sun: Frosty tangerine orange.
20. Tangelo Tint: Light yellow-orange with a matte finish.
21. 18 Karat Gold (ME24): Shimmery mustard yellow/gold.

BRONZE/BROWNS (Rows 6 and 7)
22. Copper Pot (S36): Metallic bronze.
23. Medieval Gold: Brown-gold with a metallic finish.
24. Chai Spice: Darker and warmer than Medieval Gold.
25. Oktoberfest: Warm orange-toned brown with a matte finish.
26. Oatmeal Tan (M07): Light warm brown with a matte finish.
27. Earth Rose: Red-brown with a matte finish.
28. Sundried: Shimmery chestnut.
29. Cherry Chocolate (S30): Satin/shimmery dark neutral brown.
30. Amaretto: Not pictured above but swatched below (it was one of the casualties). Metallic neutral brown.

GREENS (Row 8)
31. Celadon Green (S01): Frosty yellow-green.
32. Kiwi Green (ME09): Satin pistachio green.
33. Spring Fling: Satin minty green.
34. Teal Green (CM11): Matte teal (blue undertone).
35. Fresh Chive: Irish green with a matte finish.

(Of course, after publishing this I realize I forgot to swatch Teal Green. Sorry!)

Reviewing each shade individually would definitely get redundant so I'm just going to write an overview of the general Coastal Scents formula. The pigmentation is great. These eyeshadows rarely need layering to get a true-to-pan payoff (unless it's a very light pastel color). They're soft and very blendable. They don't crease and last a long time on the lids (note: I always use an eyeshadow primer, regardless of the brand.)

So if these eyeshadows are cheap and they perform well, then where's the trade-off? Definitely the texture. If you've used quality drugstore eyeshadows (like Makeup Geek or NYX) or high-end eyeshadows, you'll notice right away that Coastal Scents eyeshadows feel crumbly and "looser" in comparison. It's difficult to describe verbally as it is very tactile, but you can think of Coastal Scents eyeshadows as being similar to Wet'n'Wild's. You should be careful when traveling with them because they are more prone to shattering.

Final words: I definitely recommend these eyeshadows. They are particularly great for people who are just getting into makeup as they are an inexpensive way to experiment with colors. Just keep in mind that, although they perform well, they won't feel like say... Urban Decay.

Another thing you should note is that the finishes are not very varied. Most of the eyeshadows they offer are satins. There are some frosts, metallics, and mattes here and there.

Each eyeshadow pan costs $1.95. However, there are half-off sales several times a year. I got all of these during sales so I only paid $1 per eyeshadow!!
