Although the heat has been unbearable, I'm very happy that summer has arrived seeing as I am in need of break once these two weeks of final exams conclude. I have already visited the beach a few times on my off days, but sun protection is important regardless of whether you are at the beach or not. You should try to use products with SPF whenever you need to be outside, even under makeup. Neutrogena is once again encouraging the use of sun protection through their #ChooseSkinHealth campaign for which they are hosting a Twitter party on May 19th (more info below).
Neutrogena's CoolDry Sport range is ideal for outdoors physical activities, sports, and hobbies as it offers breathable UVA/UVB sun protection. Their Wet Skin range, my favorite from the brand, is great for the beach or pool because it is water resistant and comes in variations of SPF 30, 45, 50, and 85. When it comes to facial sun protection, their Ultra Sheer range is the most appropriate. It can be used all over the body, but I specially like it for the face because it doesn't have such a strong greasy residue, something that comes with the territory of most sun protectants. Plus, it absorbs quickly.
When it comes to daily sun protection, here are a few things to keep in mind:
+ The SPF found in foundations is not enough. The amount of product used to cover the face does not provide adequate protection and you usually don't reapply foundations throughout the day. Also, the SPF found in foundations is very low (10 or 15).
+ Instead of relying on foundations with SPF, apply sun protection after your moisturizer and before your makeup. That way you can have SPF when you need it and choose to skip it when you don't -- like for indoor/nighttime events where SPF causes a white cast in flash photography.
+ If you are going to be outside for a very very long time, consider skipping foundation so you can reapply your SPF without disrupting your makeup.
+ Observe how your skin reacts to your SPF. If your SPF is marked as fast drying or mattifying, consider using a heavier moisturizer that day in order to compensate. This will improve the look of your complexion makeup.
+ Don't forget to protect your lips from the sun as well.
+ Remember, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer. Protect yourself and reduce the odds.
Neutrogena is holding a Twitter Party on May 19th at 7-8pm EST (4-5pm PST). There are usually prizes, trivia, and fun interactions so remember to pop in on the 19th! RSVP here.
