Vanellope Inspired Candyland Halloween Makeup

Halloween is only about 9 days away! No matter how hard I try to prepare for it with plenty of anticipation, it always manages to sneak up on me. I previously posted an easy and wearable black/orange Halloween inspired makeup look (see it here). Today I have another simple makeup look (dramatic ones are coming soon) but this time it's inspired by the character Vanellope from Disney's Wreck it Ralph movie.  I love that movie, it's one of Disney's cutest films and it usually makes me tear up (laugh all you want, I'm a sentimental person). This isn't an exact recreation of Vanellope's character but a look inspired by her personality and the colors of Sugar Rush's candy-filled world.

Like I mentioned above, this is an inspired look and not an exact recreation of Vanellope. This means that this could easily be used for other costumes relating to candy people/queen/princes/princesses, etc. Here are the main characteristics I took away from Vanellope von Schweetz character:

01. I tied my hair up into a ponytail. I kept it messy because even though hers looks perfectly combed in the movie, I assumed it was drawn that way for animation purposes. Since she is basically homeless (and a child), it makes more sense to me that her hair should be disheveled. Obviously, you'd like to avoid wrapping a sticky piece of Twizzler candy around your ponytail. What I did was wrap a Twizzler-shaped pencil eraser around my ponytail. (It's not very visible in the pictures. I'm sorry! I failed at taking pictures from such a downwards angle.) You can find similar ones here or search for "twisted spiral rope erasers" online. I also clipped some candy-shaped hair decorations into my hair. You can easily make these yourself with hair pins, glue, and candy (real or fake). You can also find a bunch on Etsy.

02. Vanellope doesn't wear any makeup. However, I tried to emulate a youthful candyland look using products from the appropriately candy-themed Etude House Sweet Recipe collection. This collection came out in 2013 (I posted a haul and review of it back then) but you can still get some of the products on eBay (and maybe even locally if you live in Asia, I'm not certain).

03. I started by priming my face using the Baby Choux Base in Mint (this has since been repackaged and comes in a tube instead of a jar). Green primers help reduce redness. Since I was going to be using a lot of pink on the eyes, I wanted to reduce unwanted redness in the face as much as possible.

04.  For the face I used the Lovely ME:EX Angel Skin Foundation. I skipped contouring altogether because I wanted to keep my face as "round" and youthful as possible. I used a baby pink cream blush (Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Pale Pink) on the apples of my cheeks. Again, I was aiming for a fresh, glowing face (like a child's) so I avoided powders as much as possible. I went heavy-handed on the highlighter. I used the adorable White Chocolate Highlighter bar from the Sweet Recipe collection. The chocolate bars were the most popular items from this collection and are sort of impossible to find online now. :(

05. To prep the eyes and prevent eyeshadows from creasing, I primed my lids with the MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Let's Skate. It has very fine fairy-like micro shimmer in it. On top of that I applied some light pink eyeshadows (Coastal Scents Rustic Maroon and the pinks from the Wet'n'Wild Petal Pusher Palette). I then created a smudged winged line to make my eyes appear bigger using the Chocolate Smudge Liner in Dark Chocolate. To help smudge the eyeliner, I used the Chocolate Eyes Eyeshadow Trio on a pencil brush and ran it over the eyeliner. I also used it along the bottom lashline. To finish the eyes, I applied a coat of mascara and false lashes.

06. Before applying my lip color, I prepped the lips with the It's Skin Macaron Lip Balm in Strawberry. Then I applied the Candy Stick Tinted Gloss in Strawberry on the center of my lips only. I blended it a little bit with my fingers to give the illusion of having been eating lollipops.

07. I made the doughnut rings myself but you can find similar ones online.

In order to look a little more like Vanellope, it would help to wear a green hoodie like hers (I don't own one). The makeup is not character specific so it's very versatile, specially if you like pink. I hope you liked this. Do you know what you'll be dressing up as for Halloween?

  2. Pink usually scares me as I'm a bit worried about looking like I have hay fever haha. But this is amazing. So soft and gentle.
