I hope you don't think the title is too misleading. I couldn't think of another title that wasn't something really long like: 3 Underrated or Lesser Known Makeup Brands That You Might Not Have Tried Yet But Should. So... to clarify: these brands are not new in the sense that they were recently founded companies. They are "new" to me or to some readers because they are smaller brands with smaller availability. You don't hear about them as much as, say, L'Oreal or Too Faced. Also, they are all drugstore. So if you're looking for the thrill of trying new makeup without breaking the bank then you might want to start here.
I got all of these products at Wal-Mart. I went in for some face wash and cotton pads and walked out with new makeup. :) I didn't have much money and wanted to try something different so I purchased one product from e.l.f. cosmetics, Hard Candy, and Sacha Cosmetics. Here's what I got...
I was debating whether to get this, the Strobing Mix-In Drops or Velvet Mousse Matte Lip Colors. I opted for the Cheeky Tint because a quick Google search informed me that the other two had bad reviews and disappointing swatches. (Bless beauty blogs. :D) Plus, I love cream/gel blushes. These are labeled as "sheer blush gels". That worried me at first because that type of marketing language is sometimes a company's excuse for shitty pigmentation. Luckily, Diva is sheer but not transparent. You get nice color payoff and the sheerness makes the formula easy to work with. I appreciate the honesty. I was not disappointed. The texture is really nice. It has a jelly formula that reminds me of Asian makeup tints or something like the Benefit ChaCha Tint. Diva leaves a stain behind so it lasts nicely and works well on the lips too.
I was very pleasantly surprised with the Cheeky Tint. I can see myself picking up another color. Hopefully they'll expand their color selection in the future. Other products I recommend from Hard Candy (click to see past reviews): Fox in a Box Blush, Candied Color Nail Polish, and Eye'M Tired Eye Roller.
e.l.f. cosmetics is definitely the most well known brand out of the three. I own some of their products but I'd definitely like to try more. I picked up the Lip Primer & Plumper because I hadn't heard anything about it and I was looking for a cheap lip plumper. I've tried the Too Faced Lip Primer before (it's good!) but a lip primer was not something I was looking for. This product is a 2-for-1 so, what the heck. I remember trying lip plumpers when I was younger. They usually contain a stimulating ingredient such as cinnamon to increase blood circulation on the lips and help them look fuller. Effectively, the e.l.f. Lip Plumper smells cinnamon-y and it
stings tingles on the lips. It doesn't make a huge difference. Honestly it's barely noticeable, but I prefer a lip plumper to more permanent or invasive methods such as those suction cup thingies or lip injections. A plumper paired with lip liner makes for a subtle but noticeable difference. In terms of the Lip Primer side, it's nothing special. It's basically a concealer. It makes lipstick look more vibrant but I'm not sold on it making the color last longer.
Sacha Cosmetics is a really cool brand that I had never heard of before. It is manufactured in Trinidad & Tobago. Their products are aimed at African American, Indian, and Latin women. I was looking at all of their products for
almost half an hour a few minutes and noticed that they have a diverse shade selection and great pigmentation. I really liked that their peachy correctors were deeper tones of terracotta instead of straight up bright orange or peach because those don't always work well on darker skin. Their lipstick selection is huge and they have some really fun colors such as teal, grey, blue, and lilac. I picked up Forest Yump which is a forest green. I wish it were a tad more opaque and matte, simply because that's my favorite lipstick formula, but it's a great product.
Forest Yump is the only product I've tried from Sacha Cosmetics but I want to go back and get more lipsticks. They have gorgeous colors!
Note: Their lipsticks are listed as being priced over $10 on their website but I got this for $7 at my local Wal-Mart which is why I'm labeling it at that price.
Where to buy these?
+ Hard Candy is a Wal-Mart exclusive, sadly. BUT! You can find some of their products on All Cosmetics Wholesale and Amazon.
+ e.l.f. Cosmetics is available at a bunch of places. I highly recommend their official website because they have 50% off sales often.
+ Sacha Cosmetics is available at select Wal-Mart locations. You can also order from their official website. They offer free shipping on orders over $35 for U.S. and Canada. They ship worldwide but their shipping rate is super expensive. They have European and U.K. websites where the shipping is probably standard.
Have you tried any products from these brands? Which were your favorite products?
