It's about that time again: back to school. If you were stuck taking summer classes (like me) then you must feel like you didn't even have a summer vacation at all. You'll soon be needing to run out and stock up on college supplies, so don't forget to pick up the necessary skincare products as well. The stress of the college semester can wreak havoc on the skin so today I'll be sharing with you my Back To College Nighttime Skincare Routine. Hopefully these recommendations will get your skin ready for the fall semester. As the talented celebrity makeup artist Lisa Eldridge once said in her skincare routine video, your regime doesn't have to cost you a fortune. When it comes to the basics (makeup removers, cleansers, and spot treatments) drugstore is where it's at. Unlike moisturizers, these don't stay on your skin all day. You don't need them to have the most expensive ingredients (or fancy packaging), they just have to be effective. I've been using Neutrogena, Clean&Clear, and Aveeno products in my routine for years. There are some products that I swear by which have helped get my breakouts under control.

As I'm sure many of you know (since most of my readers are around my age), acne does not disappear in your twenties. In fact, I've had much more acne in my twenties than I had when I was a teenager. Acne can occur as a result of many different causes. Mine happens to be stress related. Even when I stay on top of my skincare, hydrate often, and improve my diet, exam season will come along and my skin will go crazy. Summer can also mean new breakouts because of changes in weather or traveling. That's why I try to stick to a consistent skincare routine before bed so I can get my skin back in shape. You can get all of these products at Target, they have an amazing selection of Aveeno, Neutrogena, and Clean & Clear.

1. Remove any makeup that is left on your face - Aveeno Ultra-Calming Makeup Removing Wipes

Take the day off! Even if I didn't wear any makeup on a particular day, I still might have some residual eyeliner or mascara from the previous day. It's important to make an effort to (at least) remove the day's makeup before going to bed. Going to sleep with all that gunk is terrible for the face. I know that may be really hard to do as a college student sometimes. Maybe you were studying all night or maybe you decided to go out and just want to go to bed. But please don't skip your nighttime skincare routine! Your face will thank you. These ones from Aveeno are really good for sensitive skin.

2. Cleanse the skin - Neutrogena Acne Stress Control Power Scrub

I chose this scrub because it has few microbeads. A lot of scrubs are too gritty and I prefer a gentle exfoliation. Plus, when you are dealing with acne and breakouts, abrasive exfoliation is super counterproductive. Sometimes it can spread bacteria and worsen scarring. Cleansing is such an important step in acne prevention so make sure you find a cleanser that you really love.

3. Spot Treat - Clean & Clear Persa-Gel 10 Maximum Strength Spot Treatment

I've been using this stuff for years! I first tried their Advantage Acne Spot Treatment which is good but not as strong since its active ingredient is Salicylic Acid. The Persa-Gel is made with maximun strength Benzoyl Peroxide instead. Salicylic Acid is great for cleansing and acne prevention, but when it comes to active breakouts it might not be enough for everyone. I dab this on any blemishes and then go to bed. I leave it on overnight because I find that is most effective. The more time this treatments spends on my blemishes the better. Plus, it's better to have this on while you sleep just so you don't have to walk around with white dots on your face during the day!

  1. I keep wondering what my skincare routine will be like this coming year as I start college. I'm hoping it stays similar to what I'm doing now!

  2. That was one of my mistakes back in my college days-- I didn't fully remove my makeup before bed! And my skin always felt rough the next day! Love this night time routine [client]
