Daytime Skincare Routine: Normal to Oily Skin

I never used to suffer from bad acne breakouts until my early twenties. I've started talking more about skincare on my blog because I've had to take better care of my skin as a result. There was a period of time when my skin got really out of control (around last year). I avoided photographing myself and even stopped wearing foundation all together to see if it helped. Thankfully I got it under control, and now I just deal with the occasional hormonal/stress breakout. As I've mentioned a few times before, my go-to brand for skincare at the drugstore is Neutrogena. I think they have the most complete range out there.

My skin type is normal to oily. I only get a bit oily in my T-zone when the weather is humid and hot. Neutrogena actually makes it really easy to find the right products for your skin. It can definitely be overwhelming to figure out a skincare routine considering how many products exist out there. If you take their Solve My Acne quiz, all you have to do is answer a few questions about your skin and Neutrogena will suggest a routine for you. Right now I'm dealing with the aftermath of some finals induced breakouts from July. It's important to stay on top of your skincare during the school season because your stress levels are going to start varying very irregularly.

My daytime routine for my normal to oily skin consists of:

1. Neutrogena Pink Grapefruit Oil-Free Facial Cleanser
Cleaning your face with a salicylic acid cleanser is key for breakout prevention. This grapefruit version is a nice twist on their original Oil-Free Cleanser.
Alternatively, I'll use the Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Cleanser when my skin is particularly bad.

2. Neutrogena Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Daily Leave-On Mask
In order to treat actual active breakouts and blemishes, I need something stronger such as Benzoyl Peroxide. This mask has a lower concentration of this active ingredient so you can leave it on your face while it works on your stubborn breakouts.

3. Neutrogena On-The-Spot Acne Treatment
This is definitely the most important step in my routine and the one that gets rid of nasty blemishes in the most effective way. For those red (sometimes white), inflamed bumps to go away as quickly as possible, I'll apply a dot of this on the blemish only (as this is benzoyl peroxide as well and you don't want to overdo it). I suggest leaving it on as long as possible. If you can do it overnight while you sleep then even better.

Bonus:
The Neutrogena Oil-Free Pink Grapefruit Cleansing Wipes are a great product to throw in your gym bag. You know that sometimes you go to the gym straight from work/school and still have some makeup on? Well, ideally you would take your makeup off and wash your face before exercising. You really don't want to start sweating and clog your pores with the day's dirt and grime. These cleansing towelettes have salicylic acid in them so it's the closest thing to washing your face.

  3. I've always heard so many raves about the Neutrogena line, but I never really tried it as they have a very limited amount of products available here in Norway. I'm happy to hear it worked out well for you though! I had problems with my skin in my early twenties as well, I know how horrible and frustrating it can be!! xx

  8. There are different types of masks, so if you have blemish prone oily skin areas, you may want to try a medicated mask. If not, you can use a basic mask to help soak up excess oil. Go to this site
