Too Faced x Kat Von D Better Together Eye Collection: Review + Makeup Look

Too Faced Kat Von D Better Together Eye Collection Set Review Makeup Look Swatch

The KVD x Too Faced Better Together collection was released a while ago. Although it's currently not available online on Sephora's website, you can still find it at some Sephora stores and on Too Faced's website. It makes a great gift (for yourself or others) which is why I'm publishing this review around this time.

(Note: I accidentally grabbed my sample-size of the Better Than Sex Mascara when I took this photograph. You get a full size version in the Better Together Set, not the small sample size shown above.)

What you get
One full-sized Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara ($23 value)
One full-sized Kat Von D Tattoo Liner ($20 value)
Six Too Faced Eyeshadows (Pink half of the heart)
Six Kat Von D Eyeshadows (Black half of the heart)

Essentially you're getting two small eyeshadow palettes and two full sized products from Kat Von D and Too Faced. Undoubtedly the set offers really good value. You just don't get any old products, you get one of their best (and top-selling) items. The Kat Von D Tattoo Liner has been my favorite liquid liner for the past two or three years. And after trying the Better Than Sex Mascara, I am convinced it deserves all the hype it gets. It's an expensive mascara (I tend to buy drugstore  ones) so it's not something I'm repurchasing regularly, but I wish I could. Their waterproof version is my favorite.

Packaging

Starting from the outside, the packaging is adorable. I think the design is very tasteful. The cardboard feels sturdy enough to survive traveling. I realize some people don't like cardboard packaging on high-end products because it feels cheap. I think that as long as it doesn't look cheap, it's fine in my mind. Cardboard is lightweight, travel-friendly, and survives altitude impact better than plastic or heavier materials. It's not water-resistant, though.

Cons: I find the eyeshadow palette very bulky in size. I think the eyeshadows could have been arranged differently so the heart could be smaller.

Eyeshadows

There are some standout shades that I really love. Particularly Heart of Gold and Swoon. Black eyeshadow (Devotion) can seem redundant to people with a large makeup collection but I always appreciate a matte black in an eyeshadow palette. Not only that, but this is a great quality black. Both sides work well together and on their own. You can get daytime and nighttime looks from both halves. (Obviously Kat Von D's being the more dramatic option.) In terms of quality, the formula is great throughout both halves. There is a little fallout from the shimmery shades and the Too Faced mattes are more powdery than Kat Von D's, but overall there is good pigmentation and texture.

Cons: I found some colors a bit redundant. The palette could have done with one less light highlighter-y shade. I don't feel like Por Vida (matte white) and BFF (very pale matte beige) are both necessary. Darling and Better Together are also too similar for me. One is darker than the other but they are very close in tone.

Overall

While the palette as a whole is very versatile, it could really use medium neutral matte shade. There is no proper crease/transition color. I think that Yours (which is some might describe as a cool-toned brown but to me it comes off as straight up grey) would be the closest thing, but I think a neutral matte brown would have been a more universally flattering and versatile option. I think the addition of a transition color would make this a standalone palette. Right now, I have to reach for an outside transition shade to put on my crease for daytime looks. Yours and Devotion are too dark and Power Couple has glitter in it, therefore they are not suitable substitutes for me.

Other than that, I have no other complaints and I think it's a wonderful set. Both halves include unique eyeshadow colors that you probably don't already own. The KVD Tattoo Liner and TF Better Than Sex Mascara are wonderful products on their own. So getting full-size versions of these adds a lot of value to the set.

Let me know if you also own the Better Together Collection. What are your thoughts on it?

  1. I really wanted to get this look when it first launched but to be honest, I don't think it's cohesive enough for me to buy it. It's like two different palettes smushed together, you know? That said, I still love your makeup look with it! Can you do one with Swoon (I think the Pure Red would be great!)

  2. I can see that. It's like getting two mini palettes. I found a lot of ways in which I want to use them together but I would REALLY want a matte brown to help with the cohesiveness.
    I'll try :)
