Luminous Weightless Foundation: Another win for NARS?

It's no secret that I love NARS base products. Their Sheer Glow Foundation and Radiant Creamy Concealer have been my favorite foundation and concealer for years. Whenever NARS releases new base products, I'm always excited to see if I'll like them better than Sheer Glow. Their All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation came out a while ago. As you may be able to tell from this post's brightly themed pictures, I meant to publish this review during the summer of last year. It's part of the content that fell through the cracks thanks to the incident. 😂 Better late than never though, right? Actually, this foundation formula is better suited for winter anyway so it's more appropriate for me to publish it now.

The NARS Luminous Weightless Foundation has a surprisingly low rating on Sephora's website. Its average rating is of 3.5 stars, which is considerably low for a NARS product. I think a lot of it might have to do with the fact that its marketed and described by the brand as the opposite of what it actually is. I don't know what happened there. Maybe that's the product they original set out to make. Here's its official description:

"An oil-free liquid foundation that neutralizes discoloration and delivers full, natural-looking coverage with one drop, for weightless, 16-hour wear."

Full coverage with one drop?! This foundation is one of the sheerest, thinnest, and lightest coverage foundations I've used. It has less coverage than Sheer Glow and that has a medium buildable coverage. That's not a bad thing. It all comes down to preference. But if you buy a foundation that promises full coverage.... you expect full coverage.

Here are some of its characteristics (both pro's and con's) rounded up:

  • Thin water-like texture. Very runny consistency. Looks really natural on the skin.
  • Satin finish. Leans more towards dewy on oily skin or in humid climates.
  • Light coverage. Buildable to a light-medium.
  • Can emphasize dry areas. Catches onto flakiness.
  • Gets oily quickly. I wouldn't categorize it as long-wearing.

(I used two full pumps of product for the right picture)

In summary: This foundation is not properly marketed. However, I still liked it a lot. You may love it if you're looking for something that's completely the opposite of what the official description says it does. What I like about it the most is its finish. It looks so gorgeous in person: like a natural healthy glow. I wish it had better coverage. But if you're only looking to cover up redness or minor tone problems rather than acne, scars or texture, then it's a good match for you. I think it's best suited for combination and normal skin types. It has a tendency to accentuate dryness or flakiness because the formula is so watery and has no slip.

I think if they worked on the texture a bit and updated their description to reflect what the product actually delivers, they'd have a 5 star foundation.

Have you tried the Luminous Weightless Foundation? What did you think of it?

  1. Agreed that the name/description is all jumbled up! When I think of luminous weightless, I think of sheer and dewy coverage. Also, speaking of winter -- I have a friend that lives in PR and one day she was complaining that it was really cold... It was 75 degrees hahaha that's so warm for us northeastern folk!

    1. Hahaha. I know. It's so funny that I'm a northeaster now. Some one back home was also saying how cold it was at 60-70 degrees and I was like... "I wish!"

  2. This sounds just like MAC Face & Body, which I love for more "everyday" wear. The only difference is that F&B somehow develops more slip as you gently rub/buff it into the skin; it gets tackier through application, for a lack of a better word. Other than that, I'm a huge fan of these foundations that make your skin still look like skin, in photos and in real life

    1. I know what you mean completely. I owned Face & Body for several years but then sold it in a blog sale for that particular reason. It had too much slip for humid climate. It looked gorgeous though. And I wish I'd kept it now when I'm facing the bitter Boston winter. The few times I wore it in colder climates it performed amazing. Out of these two, I think I might like F&B a bit better, it has better texture. The Luminous Weightless has better wear time, though. It just depends on what's most important to you. xx

  3. I totally agree about this foundation not being marketed correctly! I remember getting a sample when it first launched and hoping I would love it since I have oily skin and I'm really about finding foundations that last for a full day for me, and this didn't even come close! it was even more of a let down because they claim that it's long-wearing, which they really shouldn't have done. In saying that, they've got a new foundation that's just launched and I'm working my way through my sample right now and I think this might finally be the NARS foundation for me!
