The Perfect Glitter Lip Topper a.k.a. ...Lipgloss?

Have you noticed any of the articles on lip toppers: the new product to help give life to your same ol' lipsticks? A matte lipstick can be transformed into a glossy lacquer. Experiment with endless combinations of glitters on top of lip colors. How about gold over red? Perfect for the holiday season! But did you know, this has existed for years? It's called lipgloss. It's funny because I thought about that every time lip toppers popped up on my feed but it wasn't until Isobel verbalized the idea in her blogpost that I realized what companies are trying to do: re-market lipgloss. Now hold on... I'm not knocking on it. Looking on the bright side, it will probably give brands an incentive to improve their lipgloss formulas. I know many of us have a persisting lipgloss aversion because of how sticky and smelly they were in the 1990's and 2000's. Not to mention how quickly they wore off.

Although I'm a person who has always disliked lipgloss, I'm enjoying this lip gloss revival. My issue with it was never how it looked, but how it wore. Thanks to the evolution of the formula, you don't get strings of product sticking to your lips every time you open your mouth anymore. That was gross. Also, I've been trying to avoid matte finishes like the plague. As I've mentioned before, my first real winter has slain my lips/skin (in the original sense of the word, not the good social media "slay"). Lip glosses are wonderful at the moment because they don't accentuate my chapped texture.

I love that new era lipgloss releases come in more interesting finishes and colors. We have metallics, duochromes, and multi-colored glitters. Lipgloss of the past was a sea of translucent pink and beige.

There's one product I picked up recently from TJMaxx that serves as the perfect lip topper and it's the Too Faced Melted Chocolate Liquified Metallic Lipstick ($21) in Metallic Chocolate Diamonds. (I swear, soon product names will take up a whole paragraph.) Metallic Chocolate Diamonds is a cashmere hue infused with a myriad of finely-cut champagne glitter. The glitter has a blue/yellow shift so it reflects differently depending on the lighting. Its neutral base tone makes it easily wearable, but its glitter finish keeps it far from boring.

Metallic Chocolate Diamonds is part of the Liquified Metallic range but it borders more on glitter-bomb-fairy-dust than a metallic finish. I love how it looks on its own, a bit playful and ethereal but still everyday appropriate. Pictures definitely don't do it justice, it looks more striking in person. The texture is really nice as well. A bit thick, but not sticky or gritty.

Deal alert!
Heads up: TJMaxx and Marshall's have a lot of Too Faced Liquified Lipsticks on sale. I got this one for only $4!! There are other shades as well as many high-end products. If you can't visit those stores locally, the Too Faced website has this color on sale for $14 (regular price: $21).

At the end of the day, anything you put on top of a lip color constitutes as a lip topper. It doesn't have to be lip gloss (although that's basically what current toppers are). Metallic Chocolate Diamonds is formally a lipstick. Lipstick on top of lipstick. ๐Ÿ˜‚  Be on the lookout for future lipstick pairings with Chocolate Diamonds on my blog. I've been yearning to try the Lime Crime Iridescent Diamond Crushers Lip Toppers. They look magical! Or the Too Faced Magic Crystal Lip Toppers. ๐Ÿ˜

What are your thoughts on lip product layering? Have you been experimenting with creating new colors and textures? Or do you prefer a simplified one-product lip look?

  1. Love the look of that lipstick! I'm not a fan of shimmery lip colours except on nude-y browns and pinks, I think those look great with a bit of shimmer.

I find the "topper" trend quite amusing. Eyeshadow topper? Just a shimmery eyeshadow. Lip topper? That super glittery lip gloss you've never wanted to wear. As obvious as it seems to me, it's apparently a very effective marketing technique.

  2. I'm not really into glittery lip products myself because I'm paranoid about that gritty texture I remember glittery lipsticks having back in the day, and I don't think anything verging on too frosty looks very good on me, but I TOTALLY agree that when brands say things like "lip topper" they're just trying to remarket lipgloss, haha. Whenever I hear the phrase lip topper I'm like, seriously? Same with blush topper actually - to me that's just a product that doesn't work as a blush or a highlighter, but I definitely don't need to add another category of products into the mix because I've got enough already. I totally get it if people like playing around with extra products and finding different uses for them, but lip glosses have been around for a long time so to try and call them something different is just funny to me. My lips have been dry af in my first Canadian winter this year so I've definitely been reaching for creamy lipsticks and the occasional gloss a lot more often these days because my lips can't handle another liquid lipstick right now! Haha.
