Sadly, my classes will be starting again in a week. August and September typically mark the back-to-school period for most people. Generally, you want to put your best face forward at the start of a new semester but that can be hard after the summer holidays. Sun damage from the pool or beach, overindulgent dinners during vacation, and irregular sleep schedules can wreak havoc on your skin. So besides getting the typical notebooks and supplies, picking up some skincare products during your back-to-school shopping is a good idea. Try to do this a month before your classes resume (or at least two weeks before) so you give the products a chance to work and deliver visible results. Through Neutrogena‘s SolveMyAcne.com website you can receive a customized skin care routine based on your skin’s characteristics and needs. Not only are all of Neutrogena’s products easily attainable at Target stores, but they’re also affordable and student budget-friendly.
I completed the SolveMyAcne.com quiz and got the following result:
The quiz was short and straightforward. I was asked about the type of breakouts I get and their frequency, among a few other questions. Luckily, the results ended up agreeing with my current skincare routine which consists of an acne-fighting cleanser, a benzoyl peroxide spot treatment for stubborn blemishes, and a light moisturizer for normal/balanced skin. Additionally, Neutrogena recommended the Oil-Free Pink Grapefruit Cleansing Wipes for on-the-go. I have actually used these before and they were a great item to throw in my gym bag. They remove makeup but also cleanse at the same time thanks to the salicylic acid and citrus in them. This is very important because exercising with a dirty face causes clogging and acne.
Anyhow, here’s my Neutrogena skincare routine to get back-to-school ready:
01. Cleanse: I cleanse my skin morning and night with the Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Cleanser. Regardless of the time of day I will cleanse my skin if I’m going to put on makeup.
02. Treat: I apply On-the-Spot Acne Treatment to any active blemishes. I find Benzoyl Peroxide to be super effective at treating blemishes. It can be drying and harsh, especially on sensitive skin so be sure to apply a dot only on the blemish. I tend to leave it on until it has dried or for 10 minutes.
03. Moisturize: After washing off the On-the-Spot Acne Treatment, I moisturize my face with the Oil-Free Pink Grapefruit Acne Moisturizer.
+ You can use the On-the-Spot Acne Treatment multiple times a day. I apply it twice or thrice daily on my bigger and uglier breakouts.
+ Limit your sun exposure prior to beginning the semester. Not only to avoid returning to school with a bad red tan, but also because sun exposure exacerbates acne scaring and spots.
+ Schedule several morning activities a week prior to your first day of class so that you get accustomed to waking up early again.
