Purple lipsticks verge on the “unconventional” side but they’re still a lip color that most casual makeup wearers are willing to use. Probably because of its proximity to pink. I’ve also noticed that during the fall/winter season we are more likely to experiment with bold lips. So if you’re looking to try fun bold colors but aren’t ready to go for blues, oranges, and blacks, here are some recommendations for purple lip colors. (P.S. And no worries, blue and black lipsticks will be featured on the blog soon!
1. The daring neon, MAC Cream Color Base in Madly Magenta ($21): Most purple lipsticks on the market will have a cool undertone. I think it’s because violets are more flattering on the lips in general. Warmer purples are usually darker and lean towards vampy. This one in particular is a bit lighter and brighter than a lot of other violets. The MAC Cream Color Bases are multi-purpose products which work great as cream blushes, highlighters, and lipsticks. This one in particular feels really comfortable on the lips and wears well through the day.
2. The plumier option, Bite Beauty Cashmere Lip Cream in Burgundy ($28): This one is for those who prefer a deeper purple that is still not quite vampy. This color would look amazing on anyone but particularly on deeper ebony skin tones. It’s the only liquid formula of the bunch and it’s quite good. It is also the most expensive one so be sure to pick it up during holiday sales like the current Sephora 20% off promotion.
3. The matte pencil, Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Shameless ($7): Good quality and an affordable price, what else can you ask for? Shameless is quite similar to Burgundy except it’s matte and looks a tad lighter in person. This one has a tendency to catch onto flaky dry bits on your lips so be sure to scrub them and apply lip balm prior to using it.
4. The go-to purple, Cover Girl LipPerfection Lipstick in Divine ($7): Divine looks similar to a bunch of other purple/violets in the market such as OCC Hoochie, Too Faced Melted Liquified Lipstick in Melted Violet, Bite Beauty Matte Lip Creme in Grape, etc. The dupes are endless, just walk around any makeup store for a few minutes. Cover Girl’s version has a semi-shiny finish. The formula has some slip which makes it nice for dry lips. It leaves a stain behind on the lips so once the shininess wears away (which happens fairly quickly), you will still have all the color left behind.
Basically, 1 and 4 look very similar and so do 2 and 3. You could view them as alternatives for different price ranges. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be Burgundy because I love how it looks on me. My second choice would be Shameless because it’s a really cool color.
