Kat Von D Beauty is well known for its Shade + Light range which includes matte products meant for contouring. Their matte powder formula is great: soft, pigmented, and long wearing. Never chalky or patchy. The only complain I’ve ever had about it is that some shades can be quite powdery. Well, they released a series of eyeshadow quads in their Shade + Light range. These mini eyeshadow palettes fall in line with the Shade + Light style: neutral colors in a matte formula. These come in 4 colours: Rust, Sage, Plum, and Smoke. Rust is warm and orange toned, Sage has green hues, Plum includes purples, and Smoke is full of cool grays. Today I’ll be reviewing Rust.
+ The packaging is tiny and sturdy. It’s pretty, practical, and great for traveling. It includes a big mirror.
+ The formula is wonderful. The eyeshadows are soft, very pigmented, and blend well.
+ The color selection is very versatile. The Contour orange looks amazing on the lid and as a warm crease color. The pink Base color is a wonderful browbone highlight and transition color.
+ It’s a great palette for beginners who want to build a makeup collection because, other than a black and maybe a cool-toned brown, it includes all of the staple matte eyeshadows you need.
– Base (pink) and Highlight (yellow beige) are powdery, particularly the latter.
– Instead of two light colors, I would have replaced one with a matte black. Then this palette would have been the ultimate matte eyeshadow basics quad.
– If you already own a lot of makeup, this palette may seem redundant. You’ll likely already own these colors.
Basically, it’s a great starter palette (in terms of color selection) for people who own few eyeshadows or few mattes. The quality of the eyeshadows is great. You can create beautiful looks with Rust on its own, but it also works well as a complementary palette to use along side shimmer and glitter eyeshadows you own.
It has been a lifesaver for me (how dramatic) because I bought it shortly after moving to Boston. I had to leave all of my eyeshadows behind because they wouldn’t fit in my suitcases. I needed something affordable and versatile, and this was the perfect solution.
The Shade + Light Eye Contour Quads retail for $22. However, they’re on sale right now on Sephora.com and KatVonD.com for $15. Better yet, I got mine at Marshall’s (TJ Maxx) for $10!! I know not everyone has access to those stores, but you should stop by and patiently peruse their makeup aisles. They have several Kat Von D, Smashbox, Anastasia, Bite Beauty, MAC, and even Marc Jacobs makeup products at heavily discounted prices.
P.S. Happy New Year!
