Hi, lovelies! Today’s post features two things I grew up with: Mary Kay and telenovelas. My mom often used to bring home Mary Kay catalogs she’d gotten from her coworkers. Watching telenovelas (soap operas in Spanish) became a bit of a family activity that involved my mom, grandma, and even my dad, lol. Anyways… Mary Kay sent me and a few other bloggers some products to create makeup looks inspired by “Arranque de Pasión“, a new production by Univision and Mexican actress Kate del Castillo. Without giving too much away, “Arranque de Pasión” revolves around Ela, a female NASCAR racer played by Kate del Castillo, her long-time boyfriend Jordi (played by Christian Meier) and his brother Checho (played by Carlos Ponce). I don’t know how familiar you are with telenovelas but they’re all big household names.
“Arranque de Pasión” premiered during April via 15 mini web episodes on Univision (Uvideo.com). It aired in its entirety last Sunday (May 5th) on Univision. The full version is also available now on Univision’s website.
The inspiration for my look was “Ela – Beautiful at night” which meant recreating Ela’s nighttime look. I was sent the following products by Mary Kay to create the makeup look:
– Foundation Primer with SPF 15
– Mineral Eye Color in Almond, Hazelnut, Sweet Cream, and Espresso
– Eyeliner in Black
– Lash Primer
– Lash Love Mascara in I ♥ Black
– Mineral Cheek Color in Golden Copper
– Lip Liner in Spiced Tea
– True Dimensions Lipstick in Rosette
– Makeup Finishing Spray by Skindinävia
Ela’s look is very classic and feminine. She doesn’t wear much makeup on the eyes so the focal point are always her lips. I went for a smoky, smudged upper lashline using the Mary Kay Mineral Eye Color Eyeshadow in Espresso and Mary Kay Black Eyeliner. I decided to line my entire lips to ensure my lip color would last all night. I then applied Mary Kay’s Rosette Lipstick on top. I set my makeup with Mary Kay’s Finishing Spray (which is made by Skindinävia).

Since Mary Kay is the official sponsor for “Arranque the Pasión“, Mary Kay makeup artists have created several video tutorials inspired by the telenovela. You can watch the Ela, Beautiful At Night video below. There are many other videos by Mary Kay makeup artists on their YouTube channel (in both English and Spanish).

Great post I have never heard of this brand before so would love to try 🙂 I have also entered the giveaway, I love your eyes too very pretty and natural xx
I actually chuckled when I saw the word passion and telenovela. They were background noise for me growing up. I did for some reason become interested in watching Rosa Salvage (oooh dated alert!). So that's the only show I watched with my mother til completion. An american english bias starts early when most of your friends don't speak Spanish, or if they do, they only do so at home. Love your smokey eye and your toned down technique. Sadly, most telenovela's are a decade behind in makeup and fashion style. Actually, I think American soap operas are too. Think it's a soap thing. 🙂
Haha, I think novela actresses always look gorgeous but it's usually the same look over and over. Also, there's always a lot of lip lining and lip gloss used! I love how they all come out of the shower with a full face of makeup, haha.
OOOOH SO EXCITED. I'm not a Spanish speaker (despite hailing from California and my bf being a fluent Spanish speaker) – so while I don't watch telenovelas, I do watch similar Chinese soaps that sound similar. Having said that though, none of the heroines in Chinese soaps are as daring as Ela – I mean, NASCAR racer? That's so kickass. Undoubtedly though, this lipstick looks very very very good. I have a thing for browns now!! And dang girl, have you seen yourself black eyeliner like that. So gorgeous! xx
awesome giveaway! I've never tried Mary K so hopefully I'll get lucky. I love the look you created. The lip color complements your skintone and neutral looks are just great for every day wear.
Thanks so much for the giveaway Coco!!! And I love the look you created – very simple but sultry 🙂 The backstory on your 'telenovelas' and MaryKay was super fun to read about too haha <3
I can't get over how gorgeous your lashes are Coco! This is suck an easy makeup, yet so beautiful ^^ I have so many neutral palettes that I'm sure I can find similar colours to yours to recreate the look : )
Such a lovely giveaway! I absolutely love the look you did-especially the eyes! Thanks for the giveaway xoxo p.s. I'm under the name Kellybee in Rafflecopter!
Cool giveaway! I won a Mary Kay box last year, maybe I´ll be lucky again 🙂 Also I must say that I really like how your eye make-up turned out! The transition is so neat and I love the chocolate-like colours 🙂 xx http://www.clothesandcamera.com
Love this post- my mom also introduced me a young girl to makeup and novelas- and although I don't watch them anymore (except to see the handsome men;) my mom still never misses her novelas!
Yay I've been forward to seeing these looks! I'd watch novelas to help with my not so great spanish and would ask my mom constantly.."what did she say?" "Whats happening?"
I used to watch telenovelas with my mom! When I went away to college she would tape them and send them to me. The perfect cure for homesickness! I love the eye look you created with the shadow palette. You look beautiful.
Wow, that lipstick looks great on you! I could never pull that color off! The eye look is so sultry, I love it. I've actually never tried Mary Kay before, now you've made me want to 🙂
Aw, I saw telenovelas for a long time! Sadly they are not that popular anymore here in Argentina as people here likes reality shows and all drama shit. I think that I started liking make up and haircare products by seeing telenovelas like Pasion de Gavilanes where all women look so beautiful! When I went to Miami I've stayed at my aunts house and they watch televisa 24/7 so I got in touch with that latino culture I missed for a long time, so nice!
Btw, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the lipstick, too bad the giveaway is only for americans 🙁
