The better condition your skin is in, the better your makeup will look. Addressing your skin’s texture using skincare products will make your foundation go the extra mile. I was sent the Neutrogena Pore Refining line and after trying it out for 7 days, I’m going to share with you my results. The Pore Refining range aims to shrink the appearance of pores and create smoother skin. The products contain alpha and beta hydroxys intended to clean pores and surface dirt. Although your pore size is predetermined, you can prevent your pores from “stretching” and appearing larger if you take care of your skin.
I was sent the following products (left to right in the image above):
– NEUTROGENA Pore Refining Daily Cleanser
– NEUTROGENA Pore Refining Exfoliating Cleanser
– NEUTROGENA Pore Refining Toner
– New! NEUTROGENA Pore Refining Moisturizer (in-stores in August)
I really like the Pore Refining Daily Cleanser because it has a gel consistency. I avoid foaming cleansers as much as I can so I was glad this was non-foaming. The biggest and most pleasant surprise for me was the Exfoliating Cleanser. The consistency is creamy and the exfoliating beads are so small. It’s extremely gentle and reminds me a lot of a certain popular high-end cleanser.
What stood out to me the most from this range is that it includes a toner. Most drugstore skincare ranges don’t. I’ve been using a toner everyday after cleansing and before moisturizing for over a year. I find that the right toner helps reduce oil production and improves the texture of my skin. I can’t see myself not using a toner now. The Neutrogena Pore Refining Toner contains, among other things, witch hazel and glycolic acid. I’ve had good luck with these in the past so the product I was most intrigued by is the new Pore Refining Moisturizer (in stores in August). It was really cool to try out a product before its release.
Day 1: This is my “before” skin without any makeup on (see first image). I had a few summer blemishes at the moment and was using my regular skincare routine. I apologize for the unsightly pore closeup but it is necessary since we are talking about pores here.
Day 3: My skin was still adjusting to the change in moisturizer. I worry that I will run out of it quickly since it comes with a very small amount.
Day 7: Surprisingly, I saw two major results. One was less noticeable pores (probably due to the fact that the moisturizer contains silicone). The second was that my blemishes started to clear up quicker than normal. I think this is due to the fact that there is salicylic acid in all of the products, even the toner. Usually, only my cleanser contains it.
Final thoughts: I’m really happy to see a toner at the drugstore. The Pore Refining cleansers, toner, and moisturizer make a great affordable skincare routine kit. Since I’ve had a steady skincare regime for over a year, I didn’t notice a massive difference in texture. I did notice a reduction in blemishes and apparent size of pores. I was only able to try this for a week, otherwise I would have loved to report long-time results. However, based on this 7-day test it did live up to its pore claim!
