OOTD + Review: Sammydress
Continuing with my more-fashion-posts-for-2014 streak, I have a review of the retailer Sammydress for you. Sammydress is a Hong Kong based global online retailer. I was offered to try a piece from their store for free and chose this white cable knit sweater. There is a huge selection of clothing on their website but I specifically wanted a light sweater to wear with this coat. I had a hiccup with my order but overall my experience with Sammydress was a positive one.
I had actually heard of Sammydress prior to them contacting me. A friend of mine found their website and linked it to me asking me “is this real?” She couldn’t believe they offered such a diverse selection of clothing for such a low price. We’re talking about an average of $10-15 a piece here. Yes, even jeans, dresses, and coats. I had actually come across similar retailers before so I assured her it must be legit. Why are their prices so low? Well, first of all the clothing is Forever21/H&M quality, don’t expect anything more, of course. You get what you pay for. Secondly, they purchase their items in bulk straight from multiple manufactures which allows them to keep the prices low.
I was given a virtual gift card code to make the purchase myself which I thought was great because I could evaluate their service as a regular costumer. The site is easy to navigate and purchase from. You can pay via PayPal which is awesome. The problem I encountered was that I ordered one of their “ships in 24 hours” items yet several days went by and I received no confirmation of shipment. I contacted them via email (they promise a response in 24 and I indeed received one very quickly) and was told that the item was backordered and would ship when it became available again. This irritated me because there was no notice on the site that the item was backordered, nor was I notified after purchase. When my items get backordered on other retail sites, I get an automatic notification and I am not charged until it ships. Anyhow, the item was shipped on the date promised in the response email. Less than 3 weeks after ordering I had my sweater. From the day it was shipped, it took about 2 weeks to arrive.
A lot of people express concerns about purchasing from Sammydress (based on what I’ve read online) because about 50% of their clothing items only come in One Size and they’re not sure if it will fit them. This is a totally reasonable concern, but I do want to point out that the clothes I liked the most gave me a choice of SM, MED, LG, and sometimes even XL. There are plenty of pictures of each piece so the sweater I picked was exactly what I was expecting. It’s a medium thickness stretchy fabric. (Except the American Apparel tag which totally throws me off as I wasn’t expecting a knockoff.) They include measurements for every single clothing piece (even when it comes in multiple sizes) and have a cm-inch converter in every item’s page. I used this to determine wether the sweater would fit me or not.
Besides my problem with the non-notified backorder, the only other thing I want to point out is that the shipping rates are pretty high. Understandable if you’re ordering from America as this ships from Hong Kong, but it still hurts a bit. However, the clothes are cheap enough to the point where the cost of your entire order compared to the amount of pieces you get is still cheaper or around the same price as shopping at Forever21.
Would I order from them again (with my own money)? Yes, probably solely because of their coats. I’ve wanted a mint green coat for ages but don’t want to spend over $70+ for one. Sammydress currently has two that retail for less than $26 (this one and this one).
